He’s green with red spots, has suction cups for hands, and he’s got an overbite! His name is Cosmo and he is a young alien on his way to visit a world-famous amusement park with his parents. That is, until their ship is struck by a blazing comet, forcing them to land on an uncharted planet.

While his Dad repairs the ship, Cosmo heads off to explore the strange planet. Upon returning, both his Mom and Dad are gone, and big, scary alien footprints are all around his ship! Oh no! Have Cosmo's parents been captured? Possibly to be eaten? Well, Cosmo is off to the rescue.

Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure is an exciting journey across a forbidden planet full of dangers and surprises. Cosmo is a lovable extra-terrestrial with a special ability: he has hands that work like suction cups! He can cling to walls, ledges, and all sorts of things. Using his suction hands, Cosmo is able to avoid dangers, scale cliffs and get to places other aliens can't reach. Can he save his parents before they're lightly seasoned and devoured?

Great shareware jump'n'run – at its time

Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure was one of the Apogee jump'n'runs where I have played the shareware episode in my childhood. When I played it again – maybe one or two years ago – it came clear that the gameplay itself is still incredibly fun, but one factor hasn't aged well: The screen. See the next paragraph, but let me explain the gameplay first. You control Cosmo trying to evade enemies and at the same time trying to collect items that mostly boost your score. I don't remember if you get extra lives by the score, but I think you had unlimited lives. You have - as seen on the screenshot - three health bars that can fill up by finding certain items. If you lose all health, you die. Cosmo's special ability is to hang on walls, essentially being able to wallclimb. He also has explosives that he can use to for example destroy poles with bonuses or plants that give a bomb each. The game uses the typical engine of the Apogee games at that time, I think, but in contrary to those the screen is to my taste just a tad too far zoomed in. If you play this game, you will need to advance carefully, and that is something you have to keep in mind while playing. There is no stealth element, but the pace of the game makes it so that if you advance too quickly - especially also up and down - you might run into enemies, costing you health. It is partially remedied by the ability to press up or down to look up and down, but still the screen feels too small. The graphics have a small amount of "real" action on the screen in their graphics like color-changing health molecules, but animations are few. More often than not the game shows its age. Would I recommend this game? I would recommend the game to your children, and that is no joke. For a child the gameplay is a nice introduction to jump'n'runs and teaching them to be careful. Otherwise if you want a small nostalgia trip, get it also. Just wait for a sale, since the current price seems too high in comparison to what else you could get.

Galactically good!

Cosmo's Cosmic Adventures is similar to other Apogee games but that's nice. If you like old Apogee jump n run games you will also like this one. It's a colorful funny experience. The graphics look cheerful and the leveldesign is cute and fairly diversified. Climbing on walls is fun and it gives you the chills when you look down...:D and that's another nice feature, looking up and down, and sometimes this means gathering stars when being at the right place to look up...and so you can reach bonus levels which are quite interesting. Furthermore picking up special items can increase your health bar, that's a good incentive to explore levels thoroughly. And I don't know whether I'm the only one, but being swallowed and catapulted by a plant feels enormously exciting to me^^ I really think the price isn't high regarding what you get for it. Today you often pay more for games not having as much features as this game. I can highly recommend this game, spent hours on it, and not only back in the days, so I'm not idealizing it :)

A fun EGA platformer

This year (2015) was my first time playing this fun EGA platformer. The suction cup hands were a neat idea. Robert Prince's music is great as usual. The graphics are good for that time period. The enemy types were varied and interesting. The boss battles were pretty easy though once you know the trick. Levels varied between linear left-to-right to complex and non-linear and some were quite challenging to finish.

Fun at first, really hard later

In the "old days" I never had the chance, to play the full (registered) version of this game. In that time I would have said, that it is great game! Yes, you see things differently with younger eyes. Of course I only played the shareware episode and since I personally wasn't a great player I never finished it. But did manage to reach level 5 or 6 or so out of the 10. But now, that there is the chance, to get the game on GOG, well I said to myself: why not, I put on my nostalgia glasses and bought it. Oh boy, I forgot how hard this game is. The controls are mostly okay, but the enemy & traps movement/placement, primitive screen "refresh" (or whatever it is called) and also because of the limited colors palette (EGA graphics) this game is tough. On the positive site: the player gets 9 save slots and Cosmo has unlimited lives :) If you have fond memories of it, than buy it and support the developer/published and GOG. For these who gets easily frustrated, I don't recommend this game.

Excellent platformer - DOS's Mario

Loved playing the first "shareware" episode as a kid and later purchased it from apogee (3d realms) and still play it frequently today. Once you get used to the zoomed in screen this game is well worth your time. It plays very similarly to Super Mario or even Sonic but unlike those games you really have to proceed with caution. The level design of the first episode is up there with the best and while it isn't easy feels mostly fair with the exception of a few jumping sections in certain levels such as 4 and 6. I really appreciate how each new level feels unique in theme and hazards (besides 1 and 2). The next two episodes however take this blind jumping to an almost extreme level of difficulty. There is a particularly memorable level (7) in episode 2 where you are not only blind jumping but you are blind jumping onto to sides of small icy platforms right over a death pit with some of them containing those dang blue shooty plants. Basically if you don't have the reflexes of the cat on that one you are SOL. There is also less variety in the last two episodes as far as settings and enemies but that's to be expected with how these shareware version games worked at the time. Definitely worth picking up but expect to get your butt handed to you in episodes 2 and 3.
