User interface and tutorial from hell

A friend had recommended this game to me, so presumably there are some people for whom it is OK. But I wish I had not bought it. I got it significantly cheaper, along with lots of expansions, but these are useless to me since thirty years of playing computer games, a PhD in mathematics and a great motivation to play precisely this game with its great setting and beautiful graphics are clearly not enough to learn who to operate it. It also takes the kind of patience that is normally required to learn to play a musical instrument. Just as an illustration of the problems: This is probably the only game I ever played in which I was unable to finish the tutorial because it was too hard. The tutorial tells you to build a metro line, which should be doable because at that point you can already build bus lines and tram lines. It isn't. You have to do certain things in certain ways now, but of course in a game that is clearly proud of its unintuitive interface the tutorial lets you figure this out by yourself. And each time you guess wrong, you run out of money. So you must restart the tutorial and suffer again through the explanations of scrolling and panning, building bus lines and tram lines etc. Suffer, not rush, as the poor user interface and errors in the tutorial make sure you need your full concentration and a lot of time before you get to metro building again. I never figured it out. IIRC, after several attempts I had a metro line connecting two stations but could not add trains to it. I don't know why because the 'tutorial' obviously never bothered to mention this detail any more than the countless others I finally found somehow. Actual games (without metro lines, of course) were no fun either. The fight against the user interface always dominated any other challenges the game may provide. Did I mention the beautiful graphics and the extremely appealing idea of creating public transport in an existing city? Sigh.

Just wasn't fun for me.

I really wanted to like this game as I'm a fan of train simulators, sim city and so forth. For some reason, I just didn't find this game fun. While it has nice graphics, it lacks character. The UI wasn't bad but the process of getting things done lacked enjoyment. I would suggest trying out the demo before purchasing.

Bought the collection

and wish I hadn't wasted my money on it. As others have pointed out, the tutorial is garbage. I tried 5 times to build a metro, and like another user, never did figure it out. why can't I at least HIRE somebody in-game to advise me? It's what I'd do in real life if I was building a metro line. At this time, I've been unable to add any custom maps either, or other UCC. I tried creating a small map of my own, saved it, exited the game and re-started, and can't find the custom map in any location, I looked in New Game-Campaign, Sandbox and Scenario; and in Load Saved Game. It's not even accesible through the map editor I used to make it. It IS located in a folder in the Documents/Cities In Motion/Maps, but doesn't appear anywhere in-game. Custom maps placed in that folder don't show up anywhere either. I've tried adding some other UCC, placed in a folder in the game directory called "addons". That doesn't work either. I've tried at least 6 different spelling cmbinations for addons, with capitalization and hyphens. Nothing seems to work. The documentation that comes with the game is much like the game itself... it looks pretty. It won't actually help you learn anything useful about the game though. In short, if you just want something that looks pretty or you have a bunch of money you really hate, buy this "game". Good luck to you. P.S. there should be a way to edit a review...

Superseded by CIties Skylines

CIM 1 and 2 were okay - but they really served as test platforms for Cities Skylines. If you really love transport sims (you probably already have these) but otherwise everything in these is done better in Cities Skylines.

SimCity 4 Lite

Don't understand the complaints about the tutorials, I was able to finish them without much issue. You do have to read the instructions carefully, and they don't handhold key steps as much as they probably should, as I did get tripped up a couple of times. I'm going through one of the sandbox cities right now, Berlin. I had to restart the city a few times to understand the dynamics of balancing transit lines with passenger load. Hint: don't build massive lines with a million stops. After a couple hours trial and error, I now have a nice little profit coming from all my lines. The game is primarily transport focused, no city or community building like in SimCity. While it does not have that kind of depth, there is some good variety with the various vehicles and lines, along with challenges for keeping your lines profitable and customer ratings high. Besides, most of the management in SimCity was related to transport anyway. After spending several hours in Berlin, the game play does wear a bit thin, and that's where the depth tends to be lacking. Also, the buildings in actual gameplay, especially in overhead view, seem a bit drab. Not quite as bright and colorful as in the screenshots. I got the game on sale, and is definitely worth it at that cost. One tip, get the camera and line stat mods. Check the GOG game forums for where to get them, as the usual game mod sites that a lot of people link to no longer exist.
