An engaging masterpiece

First testing the game with the release of the demo, we were instantly enchanted by the story. And how does it fare after the game's release? It only gets better and better, more engaging by every chapter, new revelation, twist and turn. Does anyone remember Maupin from literature classes? I often get double excited when I can recall a given figure in the game, with their placement within the story apropriate and well thought out! The characters are enjoyable and easily memorable, with their personalities being unique among eachother. Given this game relies on reading text, no line ever seemed redundant or a chore to go through, even after hours of gameplay. This is not something many games can boast about! The banter, threats, playful or flirtitous discourse will keep you at the edge of your seat as you run through the games like a good dinner for more. The gameplay is very enjoyable, based off timing, memorisation, pattern reckognision and being a little witty and smart and being able to 'read the room' to know when to derail the given plan. The controlls are occasionally fiddly, but it never was a major detractor during my gameplay. The tricks presented are real, and the instructions are actually laid down so well it's not hard to follow through if you have the dexterity to boost! All in all, the game is built off an enjoyable story part and an enjoyable gameplay part. There are three different difficulty levels, with one more catered to those who seek specifically the story, and one to those that want to channalge their skills. Well recommended!

Fun if you know what you're getting into

Card Shark is a game that can envelop you with atmosphere and style and the prospect of cheating yourself through the underworld and high nobility with technique and wit. And while that is true, the meat of the game consists of sometimes simple, sometimes complex series of minigames. When it comes down, this is a Wario Ware during the french renaissance. None of this is bad, and the minigames are enjoyable, never overstay their welcome and sometimes require you to think quick on your feet. During some of the more daring plays, my heart started to race as if I was honestly cheating with my life on the line if I was found out. The rest of the game is just as charming. There are close to 30 minigames here and to enjoy the game you must find joy in perfecting them.

Amazing but with some missed potential

While the immediate draw of Card Shark definitely lies in the novel premise of scamming 18th century french aristocracy in a gorgeous artstyle, the game luckily also has a solid core that kept me engaged throughout the entire journey. Pros: Even though the gameplay essentially boils down to minigames focused on remembering increasingly difficult patterns, the entire package ultimately wraps everything together nicely. The game pressures you enough (with the occasional surprise to keep you on the edge of your seat) whilst remaning lenient enough to not be too punishing. The aforementioned atmosphere is also superb with a fittingly high quality soundtrack and an enjoyable story that manages to keeps things simple but with enough twist and turns to remain engaging. All in all, very engrossing stuff. Missed poential: While you can technically move freely in some sequences, there's only a few times you actually optionally interact with the environment or characters - otherwise it's only linear inputs. This feels like a shame considering the potential for dialogue with NPCs, studying the environment, side quests etc. In a game where you go from rags to riches, money barely has any function in the game aside from donating it which means you only need to to have enough for minimum required bets. It could have been nice to be able to spend it elsewhere on stuff like items, clothing and the like. The game technically has a handful of different endings, but they don't really differ much or expand in a very meaningful way. However these issues are very minor however and didn't really detract from my enjoyment. If you have even a passing interest in card tricks and the aesthetics of Barry Lyndon, Card Shark is a must play.

Nice little game

The jist of the game is that it teaches you card tricks to cheat your way through card games while also delivering a story. The tricks are fun and seem authentic (like one could pull them off in real life too). Learning the tricks and applying them was causing my brain to work pretty heavily. It was fun but ultimately I had to dial back the difficulty because i could not perform the tricks as fast as the game required me to. Everything is super chill on the lowest difficulty and the game even allows you to skip some sections after you fail, so that you can at least see the story (which is ok, but nothing to write home about) All in all, i can say i had fun with it

Surprisingly hardcore

Card Shark looks like it should be an artsy and relaxed kind of game. That is only in appearance. In reality the game will not pull punches and will punish you for mistakes. The game also maintains a degree of mystery and unpredictability as to how much it is ready to punish you if you fail too much. This is an amazing and unique game about cheating at cards. The gameplay requires doing awkward moves with your controller, remembering cards, associating cards and so on. All of this must be done within very tight timing. Unless you're a god gamer, expect to fail regularly. Some tricks are a lot harder than others and aren't necessarily the last ones in the game either. This game is short and memorable, practically a must have.
