I got the original version on STEAM, which with the dated controls does feel dated. I was delighted when I heard that Nighdive was going to remaster it in the same way they did SYSTEM SHOCK.
First off, we get modern controls with mouse-look and WASD movement, which is a HUGE improvement and makes it easier to control. I don't know how I played it so well in the 90s, but easy-to-use controls are just a blessing.
Secondly we get the 1920 x 1080 resolution, which maintains the original graphics style and sprites, but they finally don't look so blocky.
Forget Puke Nukem or SHADOW WARRIOR, BLOOD is the ultimate Build Engine game with the best anti hero protagonist ever.
Now if Nightdive only could obtain the rights to WITCHAVEN and give it the Nightdive treatment I would never have to buy a new game ever again!
Having played the for countless times I can say that this remake is worth it.
While it does not change any of the gameplay (which is good) it does add the countless amount of features. All expansions + countless graphical settings and new gameplay settings that were not there before.
Also, it is very easy to host a multiplayer game and join one. There appeared to be no lag at all when I hosted a game which is great!
Suggestion to the devs: Please take a look at BloodGDX mod for the original blood and see the Multiplayer settings. There is a way to help up a fallen teammate which made it Incredibly fun and made the game feel very dated with a feature like that. There is also a way to change the friendly fire damage % from 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 or full.
Other than that it is an excellent remake that I am happy to support.
I've loved Blood since it came out back in 1997. Was really happy when GOG sent his newsletter about this release minutes ago. Having already Blood: OUWB meant that I got a 50% discount (since it's also part of this release) and being already extremely interested that just made me fo straight to purchase it.
Now on with the game.
I gave it a quick go and checked the graphics settings. Frame limiter, 30, 60, 120, 144, 240 fps or unlimited, vsync, hi res (FHD, 2K, 4K), AA, all there.
Even though the graphics might look dated, that's actually great, because they are dated and at the same time up to date. It just seems perfect to me. And playability is silky smooth, that's something that makes it even better.
I think that the original music audio is missing, and that's the only downside, I'll try to fiddle and add the music from Blood: OUWB
If you're in doubt I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed of acquiring the game.
This is the first officially released port of Blood out of Dosbox. There were some fan source ports, but I don't think they're as good as this one, despite several small tiny bugs. nBlood was probably the best fan one, but its online play wasn't working with more than 3 people and was extremely difficult to set up hosting for.
If you haven't played Blood, just get it already, you've been missing out BIG TIME! It's the best game on the Build engine & IMO of all time.
As for this port; it captures the responsiveness and fluidity of the original version on time-specific hardware (which none of the fan ports have been able to properly replicate aside from nBlood). The graphics and music are the same as the original to keep the same spirit but are slightly enhanced to
feel better. There's also achievements, and I'm happy to say the multiplayer WORKS!!! The netcode has been fixed to allow 8 player bloodbath or co-op, just as the original intended. And while not many may care; they impressively managed to add in a split screen mode, no other source port has had this, but it works without any hiccups or performance issues, so that's great. The cutscenes work well too as the original did, though slightly lower in quality. On top of that the custom content manager is great and works very well, though some of the mods/fan addons will have to update their cutscene filetypes due to this version switching it. The ONLY thing I can really complain about is the lack of quicksaves, but you can still save whenever so it's no big deal.
There are some very small bugs, but none that would really affect your gameplay unless you're a daily competitive player or something.
All in all; this is a near flawless release with some small bugs that will undoubtedly be fixed in due time. Do yourself a massive favor, and get it!
I will also be making a video review on this version sometime soon (@Retrodeath Reviews on Youtube) if you would like to see a little more than just this paragraph.
After all those years struggling with performance of dosbox and dodge'y port that could not fully replicate games logic and mechanics, we finally got the official modern re-release of Blood.
In case you didn't know, it is a one of the holy trinity of build engine games (the others being Duke Nukem 3d and Shadow Warrior) but because of various copyright and ownership issues, the re-release wasn't possible.
