8/10

Originality is a rare quality in games, and Blacktail has this in spades – the Slavic folklore, the surrealist narrative, the unusual plot structure, the craggy yet dreamlike artstyle, the archery-based gameplay. Sure, some of the systems could be simplified and streamlined, but at least they aim to test the boundaries and seek a different point of view. Blacktail may not be a graphical marvel or a masterstroke in action gameplay, but this indie title has a fascinating magic all its own that’s difficult to define and even harder to find in games today.

9.8/10

Beyond that though, the only thing Blacktail has against it is that it calls for patient, curious players. If you’re the sort who insists on only following a dotted line and ignoring everything off to the sides, you’ll miss out on some of the best moments in Blacktail, like saving a mushroom spymaster’s best agent, or spelunking through gorgeously lit caverns. Blacktail is a game to be savored, peeling away its world a little more at a time. If you meet it halfway, you’ll be left with a breath of fresh air rarely seen in the industry these days: a well paced game that only tries to be what it wants to be and never compromises that vision. A beautiful, touching piece of work that’s bound to stick with you long after you finish it, Blacktail is a world worth getting lost in.

4/5 stars

Blacktail is an indie RPG survival game based on the Slavic Baba Yaga tale with some minor issues that don't stop it from competing with big names.

A creative and fun fairy tale!

This is the first time i write a review for a game i haven't even finished yet, but this game deserves some attention here. I read a review on some site, that said it had a lot of halfbaked ideas, bad combat and runs poorly, and i don't agree with any of that. So far the game has a really interesting mainstory and fun sidequests. The mood is lighthearted with some very dark undertones - these start quite subtle though and im curious where it will end up. I loved all the characters i encountered until now. The voice acting is fantastic and the writing is generally clever and very funny. The combat ranges from simplistic but OK to very good depending on map area with a little lack of varity but relativly challenging optional Bossfights and doesn't feel cluncky at all. It isn't up to "Horizon Zero Dawn" standards but what is? Also there is a story mode option, but no other difficulty setting. The skills are useful and the morality system should offer at least 2 somewhat different playstyls (i only tried one so far). The Exploration is where the game really shines - it has a large open world, that doesnt feel empty like a lot of indie games and never gets grindy like a ubisoft game for example. The environment is good looking and very colorful with a lot of varity in mood and tone, and the savesystem keeps up the tension in the more dangerous areas where there are less savepoints around but isn't unfair or overly frustrating. In over 12 hours playtime i haven't encountered a single bug, and haven't even gotten stuck in the environment. It runs very smoothly on my system with a tiny amount of stutter after entering a new area that quickly goes away (there are no loadscreens), although i do have a good PC that i built myself. I haven't enjoyed an open world game this much in quite a while. If you think you might like this but are on the fence for some reason, i would very much recommend it, especially for this price which is a steal in my opinion.

Fantastic game with atrocious writing

This game's world is absolutely beautiful. The art direction itself will inmerse you into this fantasy land of mystery and wonder. While limited in terms of its linearity there is still a little bit of exploration that you can do in certain areas of the game that will reward and punish you so be careful. Gameplay is pretty basic but competent. You will acquire upgrades during the game that will help keep things fresh. I liked the combat which isn't vey challenging but still requires some skill. Also I feel it's important to clarify THIS IS NOT AN OPEN WORLD GAME - it's a linear game with some open -quite small- areas. This isn't Skyrim. You'll mostly be walking down a path from point A to point B. The main problem for me was the constant dialogue. The main character is constantly ranting about what is going on. Even though the VA has a very pleasant voice it got to the point where I would've appreciated a silent protagonist. As if it wasn't enough there is another internal voice who never ceases to make obnoxious remarks about every little thing you do interjecting her already insufferable constant inner monologue. Not only that but I feel the dialogue does not adjust to a fantasy world in that is written in a very modern way. They will speak (and curse) the way modern teenagers do and it's very inmersion-breaking. It's clear the writers do not know how to write characters that live in a different time period and they don't waste any opportunitty to self-indulge by adding input to every little occurence in the game in very patronizing fashion. I do believe eveything about this game is wonderful except the writing. It's so in-your-face that it got in the way of my enjoyment of the game. While it would've benefited from less expository and self-explanatory writing I would still recommend to players looking for and a gorgeous audiovisual and relaxing adventure RPG experience.

A very unique world

For the first time, I've decided to write a review and tell everyone that If you are into exploration, and need something unique in terms of story and environments with a slavic background, this is a very good game. The artstyle feels right, it is unique, you have an open world, but it feels just compact enough with how fast you can travel and how much stuff you can do in it. The main and sidequests are good, with some dark undertones. It is a breath of fresh air in regards to open world games, and I fully recommend it for anyone who is interested in exploring, and experiencing something surreal. The devs have truly put their heart and soul into this game and it shows. For that they deserve to be praised. There are some things I don't like as is with any game, but that does not diminish the overall great experience that I had.

Very enticing and amusing game to play

A lot of people already mentioned that the combat is fine and the world building is great with good story telling. So just watch the trailer and if it catches your eye. Just buy and play this game. There is no annoying grind system, no microtransactions, the world is small but filled. From the UI to world space everything is made in a way that it all fits together into one polished product. The cursor is a little cat claw that scratches everything you click on. The world space map fantasticly drawn, really driving in the feeling of exploring a fairy tail medieval/age world when not much is discovered. Superstition is common and the unknown can contain anything. Actually having fun playing a game and enjoying my time for once. Worth every cent spent,

Beautiful faery tale.

You know how when you where younger you wished you can see those fairy tales come to life. This game does that...The wold, the characters, story are beautiful. I'am not into witches and stuff like that, but who cares. If you wanna experience an epic fantasy game this is the one to have. I really does take you to another world. In the beginning I thought my cpu wasnt up to it. Ryzen 7 3700x with a Radeon rx 6800xt. Thought my cpu was bottlenecking my gpu. Then I come back on gog, UPDATE. What ever little stutters it had, gone...THIS IS how you make video games! Love it!!! What now more reviews, on steam it got posive reviews. Only die hard action fans don't like the pace of this game. They said it was a walking simulator. Nope! Its a action exploration rpg. If you dont like fantasy games your not going to like this one. I do.
