Description
A Hat in Time is a cute-as-heck 3D platformer featuring a little girl who stitches hats for wicked powers.

A little girl and her spaceship

In A Hat in Time you play as a tiny space-travelling girl with a big tophat. Her adventure is halted when all her fuel, the Time Pieces, is lost and scattered across a nearby planet. Hat Kid must now jump, fight and stitch new hats to make her way into every nook and cranny of this new world in order to restore her fuel and resume her journey. On her way, she'll bump into the menacing Mafia of Cooks, the goofy birds of Dead Bird Studio, the spooky shadows of Subcon Forest, and more!

Murder on a train! Parades! Trespassing in a movie studio?

Every mission in A Hat in Time is unique! At one moment you'll be solving the Murder on the Owl Express by finding clues and interrogating the locals, the next moment you'll be the band marshal in The Big Parade, or sneaking through the bird-run Dead Bird Studio!

Small child, giant worlds

Jump freely around in 5 massive worlds with new adventures to discover around every corner! Just like any child, Hat Kid loves to climb and explore, no mountain is too big for her sense of adventure. She can do multiple jump moves, as well as climb walls, and swing over gaps!

Cute hats, magical yarn and snappy badges

By finding and collecting rare magical yarn, Hat Kid can stitch new cute hats with a variety of abilities, including a witch hat that allows her to cook explosive concoctions, and a wooden ghost mask that allows her to peek into other dimensions. Hats can become even more powerful, by attaching badges that are found, sold and traded by the locals!

Community-funded, community-focused

A Hat in Time was successfully funded on Kickstarter, reaching nearly 10 times its goal!

The version of this game sold on GOG does not include and support the modding tools.

An excellent title with a MAJOR caveat

A Hat in Time is FAR FROM a disappointment. It was promised to be a homage to the 3d platformers of yester-year during its Kickstarter campaign, and by god did it deliver AND some. With controls that are tight with a technically adept camera to back it up, scenarios that are overall fun to play through and experience, and a soundtrack that supports the game’s goofy and light-handed vibe yet hides surprising and epic jabs of chiptune and rock in its sleeves (some tracks, I think, are not allowed to be as good as they are, I swear to god), this is a definite buy if you were into Yooka Laylee at first, then played it, then realized it was garbage, then threw it in the can and said to yourself “if only there was something else to quench this god-awful thirst for an actually good platformer that doesn’t waste your time”. Pros: - Controls and godlike movement (double jumps, air dives into belly slides, air dive cancellation…) - Soundtrack - Character and general charm Cons: - Too short - Too DAMN short - Current mod support incoherency This is worth noting: this game was too short for what it was going for, and certain parts might have needed some more time baking in the oven. So, naturally someone would want to do more with the game, and the good news is that the modding scene is thriving quite well. The bad news is that its only present on the STEAM WORKSHOP; I don’t think GOG Galaxy will be receiving its own version of the Workshop anytime soon, so GOG users are unfortunately left out of modding privileges as of writing this review. If you don’t care for mods and are quite satisfied with keeping the vanilla game and doing repeated runs, then buy it on GOG. But if you want to consider modding the game, buying the license to play it on Steam is a valid choice. It’s a huge and sour let down that there was no mention of this by the devs, and as of now, there is still no mention of this on their social media pages. Either way, buy the game when you can. Its a treat.

Steam vs GOG

Quick comparison between distributions. A hat in time on GOG does not contain 50 player coop like the steam version. The "A Hat in Time - B-Side Soundtrack" is also not included on the GOG store. The game has a history of delayed updates for months on GOG with steam being given priority.

Buy on STEAM for Workshop Support

Probably not my best first impression of GOG, buying this game on sale, really cheap, only to realize the mod support isn't quite there. Modding is seemingly still possible, but you're limited to a total of 57 mods on Nexus that you have to implement on your own, compared to the 1,154 available on the Steam Workshop that install with a simple click. The game is actually quite short if you know what to do, so much so that I managed to 100% the game maybe 5 times now (which is a fun experience regardless), so modding *really* would've helped the replayability, had it been so vast and easily accessible as it is on Steam. If modding isn't something you're interested in, then absolutely buy it on GOG. The game is a masterpiece and deserves a TON of support for being one of the best examples of a successful and well-managed Kickstarter project.
