Fresh gameplay with nordic lore

Did you ever wonder how it would be, if you play a tabletop game and your figures would be alife and real fight instead of just imagine it? Or chess pieces who really knock-out the enemies pieces? Well, Wartile is a fresh tabletop conversion that is based on this idea, or at least it feels that way for me. Positive: - Fresh attempt of a tabletop conversion. - Each hero has a unique set of equipment (armor, weapons, upgrade tokens), abilities, strenghts and weaknesses. - Fluent gameplay mechanics, the key to success is to find/ built a party for a battlefield, that combines those strenghts and weaknesses of each hero and move/place you heroes strategically. - Good and fitting soundscape. - 3 difficulty levels for each battlefield with unique rewards. - Good price/content relationship, especially on sale. Negative: - Linear storytelling, no real turning points, you get told what to do next and thats it. - You unlock new heroes while playing, but their background and personal story is not explained or part of the story. You just get about 5 lines of "background info", kinda wasted potential. - Some heroes are definitly more useful than others and using some felt like a "handycap". All in all it is a fun game experience that I enjoyed to play and I would like to get an expansion or Wartile 2. I can second most of the points mentioned in the other review below, tho I had no lootchests that I couldn't reach. Also there are 3 difficulty levels for each battle and while it is correct that you do not need to do it for finishing the campaign, you will need to do it if you -want- to beat all the battles on higher difficulty.

It's different

Is it an action game? Yes, and no. Is it a card game? Yes, and no. Is it a strategy game? No. Very brave brave from the devs, especially for a small indie team, to imagine and implement a type of gameplay away from the standards. It's a whole new ball game. Does it work? Yes, it does. At first, the "combat" system may seem awkward (though not overly complicated). But when soon you start to master it, you realize that it was only because you had to learn a new type of logic and moves. The "in town" part is somewhat clunky, especially the shop and inventory. But the main game and combat are very polished and nice to look at. Two things that I don't like, though. But it's just a matter of taste: The game don't save when you quit on a combat-map, and you'll have to restart the whole map all over again. And meh! to the maps where enemy re-spawn again and again all around you (this, I just hate and it will make me quit Wartile sooner than I'd wish.) You have to play a few maps before judging the game, because... it's different.

Pleasant surprise

I didn't expect much for 9,99- EUR (release-discount) but i was quite surprised. The game is wellmade hybrid between sqadbased RTS and RPG, focused on the battles. I haven't to tell you much that isn't allready descrided at the shoppage, another surprise, just a few comments. The story is nice and well told while "only" using Text&Audio. The battlefields a are wellmade and add nicely to the nordic atmosphere. All squadmembers have a uniquie playstile and teaming up different member change the required tactic. The enemys are wellmade and fit the mysthical nordic theme well. There're some downsides, I. the game is not finished, some description are missing or labeld "work in progress", there're some minor thechnical problems ( like a lootchests spawning at a location where you can't open them) and finally...sometimes you have to replay old battles everal times to get loot but most the time missionrewards a re enough to give you a good equipment.

Care for a round of Gwent?

Try this game instead! It's the perfect game for a quick round of fun. Some levels can be solved in multiple ways, but most of the times only one solution works. The art direction and the execution is top, it's one of the most beautiful games I've ever played. And it's fun, which is the most important thing.

weird mishmash

It is a real time turn based strategy. That's a new one. Abilities work in real-time, but you play turn-based. Also, on the first screen one of the chests simply don't work. Also have like zero idea on a handful design-choices. Try a demo before buying!
