The United States is a nightmareland of toxic waste, melted ice caps, and desperate shortages of oat bran. Horrible mutations roam the countryside... monsters spawned of radiation, environmental toxins, and unregulated bio-engineering. But in a tiny corner of New Jersey, a small group of Superheroes has banded together. Their mission: to nurture the rebirth of a new society, to ease the suffering of the dark age, and to provide a place where Superheroes can always find a date on Saturday night.
Lead a hilarious band of superheroes on a dangerous quest to defeat the evil Doctor Entropy. Select from League members including Tropical Oil Man (can raise opponent's cholesterol level), Zaniac (the power to confuse) and Captain Excitement (puts animals to sleep).
Battle ferocious Aerobots, flame-throwing robotic exercise teachers (when they say, "Feel the burn", they mean it). Fight the dreaded Albino Rhino and 30 other wacky mutant including Cy Young Cyborgs, Screaming Meemies, Cruise Mistletoes, Junk Bond Amoebas and the awesome King Kong Salmon, who return to the top of the empire State Building to spawn!
Six levels of adventure! From Three Mile Island to Atlantic City, society is struggling to climb back up the ladder of civilization, while Doctor Entropy is busy sawing off the rungs! A ground-breaking mix of adventure gaming and role-playing!
Design by award-winning game-god Steve Meretzky
Battle with Lawyers, Supermoms, Cy Young Cyborgs and Steroid Men. Over 31 more flavors of enemies to lick!
Wield Ginsu Knives, nuclear-tipped Brass Knuckles, cyanide-laced Silly String, and more than 50 other implements of destruction (including the terrifying Slinky of Death)!
Criss-cross the US eastern seaboard from Buffalo to Atlantic City, Three Mile island to Manhattan
Along with Mission Critical, here's a game that I've been dying to replay. Bought it back in the floppy days...hilarious superheroes and villains, the setting was also quite memorable. The superpowers and the combat kept me going as much as the city exploration and story did. I've always felt this one deserved a remake, but replaying this classic will have to do...thank you once again GOG!!
It's hard to say this is really the best Legend Entertainment game because they're all so great, but this is my favorite. This game stretched the limits of the Legend adventure game engine and basically turned it into an rpg game engine. The comedy of the story and characters are hilarious.
This is one game that deserves a sequel beyond any others. It's a true crime that this is the only game to come out in the Superhero League of Hoboken universe.
I feel dumb. I've been asking GOG for this game for years, and once they bring it I don't notice in MONTHS. Well, as soon as I fixed that mistake, I purchased, downloaded and launched the game. I'm pleased to say nostalgia didn't play a factor in my memory: this is still as great a game as it was back then.
Legend Entertainment usually dedicates to graphic adventures. This is no different, but it also adds some JRPG elements, like turn-based combat, equipment upgrading and level progression. Games of this series usually revolve around traveling around talking to people, gathering items and solving puzzles. In this one you also have a minimap when you're on the outside world, where random combat happens.
While the gameplay itself isn't particularly innovative, what sets this game apart is its insane sense of humor. The story revolves around managing a league of superheroes and improving their standing in a post-apocalyptic world. The thing is that your heroes are not the typical "super strong" or "telepathic" individuals. These people have extremely specific powers like "Being able to see inside pizza boxes" or "Being really good at treading water".
At first you wonder "When the hell is THAT ever going to come useful?", but as you progress through the game you'll realize the crazy situations you're put in demand their use more than once. And lest you think the game makes it incredibly obvious, you'll soon realize it's not always that simple. You might think that taking the hero whose power is to put animals to sleep will let you easily free a village of a large group of rabid sheep, but you'll be quickly proven wrong.
Newcomers might be a bit turned off by what at first seems like unforgivable combat, but the key is to pick your fights (don't leave without the item that tells you how hard the enemies are in an area) and improve your characters as often as you can.
This is one of my easiest recommendations. Get this game now!
Ah, this little gem has been lovingly pickup up from the Abandonware heap and polished. This game is a hybrid of wacky adventures games, plus JRPG combat elements. You assemble your bottom-tier superhero wannabes and rejects, and adventure into the bizarre wastes of New York. As the story progresses, you unlock additional characters, some of which have unique talents that you'll rely on to overcome certain obstacles. At times, the combat can be brutal, if you're ill-prepared, and you'll have to contend with radiation spikes and high water levels. Most of the puzzles in the game are easily solved with minimal pixel-hunting (but I do remember missing one required item I needed at the end of the game, that I could have found in the intro area. Can't believe I had to use a walkthrough for that!)
I'm torn between giving this a game between a 4 and a 5. For metric's sake, I'll give it a five, but I have a critical bit of advice for those who HAVE NOT played the game. There are a finite amount of enemy encounters, meaning, when you clear an area of goons, they will not respawn. The game employs a "Danger-o-meter" that shows the deadliness of your enemies, as well as when the area is cleared. This is important as, when the baddies are gone, so is your ability to get more money and buy items. So think ahead about what items you truly want, and to give permanent power-ups to characters you intend to stay in the party.
But, otherwise, enjoy the weird sense of humor (such as defusing a seriously inconveniencing limburger cheese- dirty bomb to finding the frozen remains of Walt Disney in his secret vault) and save the world from those who want to watch it burn!
I've been waiting for AGES for this (and hopefully more Legend titles) to hit GOG. This is seriously one of the best RPG adventure games ever made, especially if your into weird humor. There is no fault in this game. It does everything in the best possible way and no this isn't a "nostalgia-based" review. I've been playing this game over and over every once in a while on my very own DOSBox, but I just had to buy it here when I saw it hit the store. Amazing stuff.
