Hi, I thought I would make a post about modding the Yakuza games as I have already delved deep into this topic whilst trying to mod Yakuza 0 GOG (on Linux no less!).
What is Ryu Mod Manager (RMM)?
RMM is the defacto mod manager for the PC ports of all the Yakuza games, including games on the old engine (0 and K1), games on the "new" Dragon Engine (6,7, K2, Judgement, and Lost Judgement), and games on the remastered old engine (3-5 remastered). Ok, I say all but I am unsure if the Ishin remake is supported. RMM has both a GUI and CLI version, and also has support for Mod Organiser 2.
Does RMM support the GOG versions of the games?
Unfortunately not. RMM checks the game exe's hash to validate it before being used, but the GOG versions have different hashes than the Steam versions (which are the hashes the program checks for). There is a pull request on GitHub to include the hashes for the GOG versions of 0, K1, and K2, but the author has not accepted these yet and it doesn't look like they will anytime soon. If you really want to, you can build this fork yourself, but I have not tested this myself.
EDIT: A new version of the mod manager known as Shin Ryu Mod Manager has released, with support for GOG versions of the games
Why mention RMM if it does not support officially GOG?
The problem with RMM being the main mod manager is that 90% of mods are made with RMM in mind, which means they can only work with RMM. The reason being is RMM can read loose mod files, but if you are manually installing a mod into the games directory, it needs to be archived into the PAR archival format. This format was specifically made for the Yakuza games and therefore requires an external tool to both extract them, and to archive files into them. This program is called ParTools. Theoretically, you could download an RMM mod and archive it yourself, but this may have different levels of success depending on the mod.
Where to look for mods, and what to look out for?
Nexus mods is the best site to llok for Yakuza mods, it is where most get uploaded. Before downloading a mod, preview the file contents. If it contains files ending with .par, they should work with manual installation. If it contains files ending with .dds, this means they are loose files and require RMM (which like I said is incompatible with the GOG versions), or to be archived yourself with ParTools (which may not always work).
Also, I always recommend consulting the PCGamingWiki for essenential mods and tweaks to games.
