Is this one of those games that only looks right on a widescreen monitor? The text is so small it is practically unreadable for me on my normal monitor.

No, it's pretty small on a 16:9 with 1080p. I wear glasses and still have a little trouble, but I find it's only the 'encyclopaedia' that looks tiny to the point where I couldn't be bothered reading it.

That's interesting, I was going to try it on my brothers widescreen with that aspect ratio.
I'm finding the text so small I have to lean forward just to read most of it.
Game is meant to be played with 1600x900 aspect ratio.

Looks normal on my 22"

My 2 cents...

My brothers pc uses that size monitor and aspect ratio. The text is slightly more readable than on my 19" but its still kinda small.
Yea, its unfortunate. I like playing this game in a lower resolution so the tactical game is zoomed in. At high resolution I miss a lot of details. The only problem is that the rest of the game is terrible looking at lower resolution.

It is? Got a source for that?

Looks fine on a 23" 1080p monitor here, and I wear glasses. It's a fair question, though, as GOG screenshots are generally pretty heavily compressed, resized, and cropped. I'd suggest looking up a video of the game being played at a high resolution, at high quality, to maybe get a better idea. You can also play it at a lower resolution than your native res, but that's always an unhappy compromise.

Fact is, it's an information-dense game. Some stuff is going to be kinda small.
My 2 cents doesn't buy a lot in this world mate. I can find small details though, that are usually accurate. It seems the best quality is meant for 1600x900. Is what I meant. But I understand that wouldn't really come across in my previous comment.

The games we play usually have a "sweet spot". Feel free to have everyone say what screen ratio is good for them and we can collect that data here on the forum and see whats what. =D
With 2d graphics, lowering the resolution usually makes things bigger on the screen. That's how Xenonauts works with the tactical battles. I like playing them at lower resolution because it makes me feel more involved in the action. I also have trouble making out what the aliens are supposed to be a 1080p. My vision could be better I guess. The problem with Xenonauts is that the strategic part of the game doesn't work the same way. Things still take up the same amount of screen space, they just aren't drawn with all of the pixels. Its like they are being compressed, and loosing a lot of detail in the process. It looks like all the GUI stuff is reskinalble though, so this may be fixable by modders.

In the mean time, I guess 1600x900 is the best happy medium. The tactical portions are little more zoomed in than my native resolution, and the strategic portion of the game doesn't appear to be leaving out pixles. I take it that means that Shmacky-McNuts is right about the 1600x900 thing. It may not look as sharp as your monitors native resolution, but it does look like the games GUI was built for that resolution or at least not for less than it.

Interesting information

I don't really have much time to play this right now and it sounds like something that the devs are unlikely to be able to alter in a patch. I will wait a couple of months for a fix or use my brothers widescreen PC.

Thanks Everyone, my question is answered.
