According to one of the reviews here the game requires you to go online and connect to egosoft servers for certain things that obviously have nothing to do with multiplayer.
Is that accurate? Do you really need an egosoft account for playing this single player?

No, you don't need any kind of account to play singleplayer.

There are certain features that will be unavailable without an account, namely Ventures where you can send one of your ships into the universe of other players and they'll do some stuff there and then come back to you with rewards. This also means that those rewards will be unavailable to you. Outside of mods I think Ventures are currently the only way to get ship skins, not 100% sure on that though.

I've played exclusively without an account and the online stuff explicitly turned off and am very happy with it. :)
