Hey, I really like sandbox games like Mount&Blade and Kenshi and I heard this is very similar. It's a bit confusing because X3 has many add ons and DLCs and what not, some of which are standalone and some are more like expansions.
My question is, which of these games would you recommend for maximum sandbox possibilites, Albion Prelude or Terran Conflict? Or are they not really separate?

GOG only sells Terran Conflict and Albion Prelude together as the Terran War pack so what to buy is very easy. Technically speaking X3AP is an add-on to X3TC and uses several files from it but plays as a standalone game.

We have had discussions about which is better and and how and why before in this subforum, if you do a search. The X3TC story lines can be modded into X3AP. I like both and alternate and get confused as the same ship name has a bit different stats depending on the game.
