I just started playing this game, but so far I've been unable to bring the map up using either keyboard or controller. I think you're supposed to be able to bring it up by pressing A.

Never mind... I answered my own question. First you need to purchase maps in the Item Shop, and then either the A button on the keyboard or the X button on a game controller will work.
