So, I just reached the city in the treetops and performance is so horrible it can lead to crashes when there are a few different AI groups interacting in some way, via battle or just passing by each other as they wander the narrow city paths.

Previously the game had been smooth regardless of the amount of NPCs and only had mild performance issues in certain areas.

Is there a way to fix this? It's quite unplayable and leads to lost progress. I'm using glide. My PC is an i7 3770K, 16GB DDR3 and HD 7970 3GB GPU so I can only assume this is an issue with the outdated game engine, but perhaps there's a solution? I mean, I imagine people completed the game on far weaked computers back then so perhaps there's some kind of compatibility issue that can be fixed.

Anyone?

Edit: well, it crashed once more but now it doesn't happen any more for some reason so I guess it was a fluke. Maybe. Hopefully.

Edit: I tested again different things, it was the sound device. I was testing RAD 3D audio since it said it functioned but it causes that issue. I reverted to Miles 2D audio and it's been smooth like previously since.

I wonder if this is behind some of the other problems that people have reported re sound not working or the game crashing/refusing to launch.

Unless you actually have one of the sound cards stated it's best to stick to the Miles 2D option. DirectSound may or may not work, but the rest will invite trouble.
This could be true. I have a CL X-Fi Xtreme Music and use Alchemy , so I get full EAX effects, with no issues at all.
