I've always been a big fan of Wizardry 6 and 7 and I was wondering if anyone knew of any newer games that followed that same kind of style. I have tried a few indie games, but honestly so many games get made these days I can't follow them all.

Thanks.

Wizardry 6 and 7 don't seem to have been emulated much.

There are many Japanese games that emulate earlier games in the series (1-3 and 5). Most are Japan only, but every once in a while, one of them sees a US release. One such game even made it to GOG: Elminage Gothic.

Just one warning: Elminage Gothic, once you get past the first (3 floor) dungeon, gets quite brutal; instant kill enemies (in a game where resurrection has lasting consequences) start appearing as early as the second dungeon, for example.

I´ve mentioned it somewhere else before. The Etrian Odyssey (3ds) series is deeply influenced by wizardry (the developers said it). But it´s more a dungeon crawler, not a classical rpgs. On the other hand you have implemented excellent mapping tools and a modern high advanced skill system and a well balanced gameplay.

Well, Grimoire finally got released after 20+ years for a ridiculous price: http://store.steampowered.com/app/650670/Grimoire__Heralds_of_the_Winged_Exemplar/

It's shameless self-promotion, but I've been working on a sort of Wizardry-like (it's cyberpunk though), here's a playable working build with plenty missing but it's a work in progress: https://spotonj2k.itch.io/cyberworlds-working-build
Bard's Tale IV is coming out next year. Not much is known about it yet, but considering BT1-3 it's probably in the right ball park.

Hey that Cyberworlds game looks pretty cool. I love RPG's but prefer cyberpunk to fantasy anyway, so this appeals to me.

Hope you get it finished and published!

Thank you! Working on character creation now, one of my favorite parts of an RPG.
Thanks for the suggestions. I will check them out.

When I was a bit younger I desperately wanted to do the art assest for a Wizardry-like cyberpunk game. Great to see someone making one!
Along with aforementioned Grimoire and Elminage Gothic, I could recommend Swords and Sorcery: Underworld.

And one of my favorites of all time - Ishar serie (it has real-time battles though). Visually brilliant and really magical.

Go for Realms of Arkania (Das Schwarze Auge).

The classic games not the remakes!
People who made the remakes did not understand the difference between 3-13 or 2d6+1....

You can take your party and most items with your through all 3 parts.
(Use all your money on herbs before export and import to keep your wealth ;) )

You get to explore a huge map, Part 1 + 2 with overland worldmap where you need to switch locations.
Not every dungeon is mandatory, you can skip like 70% of 1 and 2 and still finish them.
During your first playthrough you will mist likely miss 30% of dungeons and quests anyway.
3 is much more linear with much less optional content.

Lots of items, many flavour weapons, armor and items, which you do not really need but are still in the game.

NO class changing though, but in this game everyone can learn everything anyhow.

Visually, Part 1 is equal to Wiz 7 (same movement etc) , Part 2 is clearly superior (semi 3D on a grid movement),
Part 3 is fully 3D like Wiz 8. (But looks much better than Wiz8)

If you decide to try it, read the manual for Part 1 first (at least the introduction so you know where to find your first quest). Also the automap is as rudimentary as in Wiz 7, so best take a lot of notes. Especially for the main quest, so you know where to go.

THE GAME DOES NOT KEEP TRACK OF YOUR QUESTS FOR YOU.

------------------------------------------

What people do not understand is that Wiz 6,7,8 are VERY different from 1-5 and many others.
Explore an open world in a first person view, with lots of character development and a deep story.
Not the regular dungeon crawler as EO.

-----------------------------------------

Grimoire is... a matter of taste.
Checked it out and stopped playing after 10 minutes.
Too much .. inspiration from too many other games all mashed into one game.

Other turn-based open-world games that are in first person include:
Might and Magic 1-5 (3 removed the separate battle screen, while 6 got rid of the grid and added real-time gameplay (with turn-based mode still being available)
Dragon Wars
The Quest (only one character; this game feels like a turn-based grid-based elder scrolls game)

Reading this gives me a desire for a game that I don't think exists.

This would be a game where:
* Open world, first person perspective on a grid, turn based, much like Wizardry 6-7.
* Job system like what you see in games like Final Fantasy 5, Final Fantasy Tactics, Tangledeep, and Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark. That is, class levels are separate from character levels, you can change classes without losing any previous experience, but you are limited in how much you can borrow from previous classes (so your fighter who's learned all the spells would need to choose *one* type of spell to be available at a time, but you still have freedom to try different combinations).

If this game existed (and available DRM-free, and no other serious issues), I would buy it.

Yes, I think that combining the best aspects of WRPGs and JRPGs in one game, at least compatible aspects, could lead to some truly expectional CRPGs.

(It might also be interesting having a game in this style, but with SaGa-style growth; we see Wizardry 6-8 allowing you to improve skills by use, all we need to do is extend this mechanic to include stat growth as well and get rid of levels and experience points.)

Specifically Wizardry 6-7? there are very few titles considered as direct succesors or inspired in. But Grimoire is the closest nephew. If you loved Wiz 6-7 you will love Grimoire. Very hardcore old school rarity in our times.

And of course you should try Wizardry 8 and Wizards and Warriors.
