Don't know if this is an oversight or what but all of the characters I've rolled in the training ground and use custom portraits on have female voice grunts in combat by default even if I chose a male portrait. Obviously the game just sees them all as PNG images and nothing more but I didn't see an option anywhere to select gender or voice type, is this a known issue or what?

I have noticed this as well as all my characters speak (or rather, "grunt") with female voices. One possible solution for this that would have to be implemented by the developer would be to put tags in the file name. A few examples:

female_character1.png
male_character2.png

The game would have to recognize the above prefix as a tag and make the appropriate changes to the player characters.

This is the way Legend of Grimrock 2 handles customized character portraits.

The workaround I discovered is to pick one of the in-game portraits then switch back to custom, you'll get whichever associated voice you wanted then.
