You can run the WC3 setup program manually to change controls, video mode, music cards, and other things by amending "-i" (without quotes) to the wc3.exe. Basically, open the DOSBox configuration file (dosboxwc3.conf), scroll to the bottom and add -i after wc3.exe in the autoexec section. I highly recommend changing the music card to something else, like MPU-401 and use a custom soundfont like Shan's.

Evidently my game isn't saving the options I choose (such as music volume) after quitting the game. Is this an issue for anyone else?

Would you mind giving some instructions how one could set up an MPU-401 with this "Shan's soundfont" on a modern PC? Because hacking DOSBox and staying informed on emulating old midi drivers/cards is not something I'm at all proficient with.

Soundfont: http://www.geocities.jp/shansoundfont/

If you don't have a Creative sound card with access to a control panel, you'll need to get BASSMIDI: https://github.com/mudlord/bassmididrv

Run it, and select "SGM-V2.01.sf2" (the extracted soundfont). Then for Default MIDI Synth, select BASSMIDI.

Now, you will probably need to set the default MIDI device for the machine again. Use this to do it: http://www.sierrahelp.com/Utilities/SoundUtilities/PutzlowitschsVistaMIDI_Mapper.html

Just download and extract/run it and select BASSMIDI as the device.

Now when you run the WC3 setup and select MPU-401/General MIDI, the device used will be Shan's soundfont. It'll be much better than the default Windows MIDI sound.
Awesome, thank you! :)
It worked. The Music now sounds WORLDS better. Amazing.

Again: Thank you very much! :)
For creative cards, make sure you have the soundfont bank installed.

kivaveikko: could you also give advices on how to load the soundfont with creative card+ console
Load up the Creative Soundfont Bank Manager and load the soundfont under the Bank menu.
Thanks for this :)

Set your options and than save game via terminal. Strangely enough - without saving, game cannot remember certain options (like music volume) while it can remember others (like difficulty level).

That setup program brings back some memories, not all of them positive...

Yes, I remember I saw message at the bottom of the screen while testing SVGA. Had to replace my STB card and purchased ATI :-)

I never had enough memory to run, didn't have a good sound card or enough juice for the video settings. Had to upgrade the whole computer just to run the game... but in the end it was well worth it.

I purchased the game right after I replaced my CPU for brand new P120. For a long time when on a mission I deliberately left last Kilrathi fighter, didn't shoot at it - just gliding right behind it watching how it turns and spins, not a single lag in animation :-) Golden times.

I had a 486DX, 8MB memory, VGA card, 300MB hard drive, internal PC sound. Replaced with Pentium 100, 16MB memory, SVGA and sound blaster. Had to upgrade again to WIN95 when Diablo came out...
