Does anyone else using a joystick have an unusually large sensitivity dead zone? I have a hard time finely aiming at ships because the joystick doesn't respond until I move it by ~1/3 of it's range. The problem isn't my joystick, in windows the calibration works fine. I thnk it's either the game or dosbox itself.

It's not even off the first page. In short no, DOSBox doesn't handle joysticks well, even though someone posted code to better support them in the forums at dosbox they haven't included as a standard which would be nice.
Crud, the link to the compiled version of dosbox with the joystick patch in your link is dead and I can't find it anywhere. :(
I also hope that GOG or somebody else provides a joystick patch. I'm using a Wingman Extreme joystick and the overly large deadzone makes dogfighting very difficult in the later missions.

Here is a custom DOSBox build that adds support for setting a joystick deadzone. I haven't tried it but hopefully it will do the job.

To get this working replace the game's DOSBox installation with this one and then edit dosboxPRIV.conf to include the new deadzone parameter. If you need help doing any of this reply back and I'll explain in more detail. :)

Hey man, I would love to get the ability to tweak the dead-zone of my joystick for Wing Commander; unfortunately the link you provided seems to have expired. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I'm using a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, for reference.

With Logitech just use the profiler to make a deadzone.

I can't figure out how to lessen the dead-zone in the Logitech software; the slider only allows me to increase the dead-zone, which would only exacerbate my problem. Do you know how to decrease the dead-zone in the Logitech software?

Oh it's too big, no I don't know how to make it smaller that is either a problem of the game itself or Dosbox.

edit:
You might want to try editing the .conf file and set:

timed=false

Unfortunately, it's already set to timed=false.
