I`m quite enjoying the game now, but sometimes I get blown up by mines. There seems no way to detect them. I pick the bomb disposal icon and wave it over the ground in the hope that works, but it don`t.
Do I need a super high awareness skill to notice them somehow?

Enable perception (magnifying glass icon on skill panel below). And yes, it's better have appropriate specialist. Also helps finding all nook and cubby holes with (not so) epic loot.
