I have the CD version of DLR and I want to suggest this game to my friends to be able to play it too, knowing that it's very hard to get hold of and this is about the only place right now. However, after reading some of the threads on here I'm concerned about the units being the fan-made unit stats rather than the original game. I have seen some people say that there's an option to 'revert to original units' though.

I can compare some unit stats with people to see if its the same version, particularly things like Knights still having 5 strength, and some of the 'new' unit abilities and hero level ups so can someone check what version the game is for me, I really want to be able to recommend this to my friends to experience the original campaign and not whatever a fan came up with for multiplayer balance.

The threads you read are wrong.

DLR had two official patches that were released a few months after the game. They added additional abilities, changed some units, and included a major overhaul of the heroes.

Since back in 1998 patches had to be installed manually, and many people still didn't have internet access, there's a whole bunch of old fans who never played the patched game. That's where the misconception came up that the changes in the game were "fan-made", when GOG released it with the 1.02 patch included.
Ah I kinda forgot - it was heavy cavalry that got buffed to 5 strength, and knights that were already nerfed with the loss of the morale bonus don't compare any more. I see knight lords don't give morale any more either.

How does the campaign balance work with these units? I expect there to be some tangible effect.

I think my resistance to the changes might be in part because I'm so used to the old units (which in themselves are much closer to the original ROH units).

I found that the main campaign somewhat more difficult with the patch. Main reason though was the change to heroes rather to units. Though nerfed knights and knight lords make you rely even more heavily on pegasi than before, which made the campaign less enjoyable to me.

Overall, I liked the vanilla balance much better...

That's exactly right. Though I wish GOG gave an option to users whether to use patched or unpatched game. I personally liked vanilla version better.

Well, there's a game editor you can download, and I could supply you with a comprehensive list of the changes between 1.0 and 1.02. It's not impossible to simply revert all units and heroes to their previous stats (or even those of Reign of Heroes) for nostalgia's sake, but you would probably not improve the game balance that way.

You may have seen my recent post; I'm working on an overhaul mod that's intended to improve the balance between units and heroes comprehensively, and the intent is that you can play all original campaigns and scenarios and have a fresh, and hopefully more challenging experience, where you don't simply mass produce your one best unit.
