Now, I am under no illusion that it ever could be possible in the game itself, but I'm a sucker for 'what if...' ideas like this. And if there ever is a 4th game it would certainly be a feature I'd have a lot of fun with.
The premise: Imagine if each of the units in your Retinue could be equipped with two items, what would you equip what units with?
The condition: What item slots a unit have depends on what kind of unit it is.
A Humanoid unit, ranging from anything between a tiny Pixie or Sprite, to something as big as an Orc Giant or Minotaur King, or even the funky Treants, would have at least a Chest slot, with a second slot depending on if it is Melee or Ranged. The former get a Weapon slot, the latter get an Accessory slot. If it got a torso, two arms and two legs, it is typically Humanoid.
Non-Humanoid units would get 2 Accessory Slots.
Resource generating, casting malus/bonus, and morale, effects do not apply/work on a Retinue unit for this example.
Health, Mana, Regeneration of both, Armor, Resistance, Damage, Damage Type, and similiar would work on a Retinue unit.
Personally?
As a first example I'd probably get an Imperial War Elephant with a Troll Ring and Orb of Protection or the like tacked on, to make it tougher and heal up quicker. Mostly because, as I noticed the other day, a level 12+ War Elephant ended up causing a Fear check for almost half the screen.
A High Elf General, Moonguard I think? I would equip with Mana and Mana Regen Chest+Accessory, just to see the Multi-Shot spam go haywire! But wait, if a Banshee is a Melee unit, and thus would get a weapon slot but also get to keep their AoE attack... Dare I even imagine how Slash crits would work with that?
What would you do, anyone who reads this, do if equipping Retinue units was a thing? Of course, this is more aimed at Singleplayer than Multiplayer, but don't let that stop you.
