so wasd seems to work for everything cept going backwards, is there any way to make S go backwards?

X moves backwards.

This game didn't originally support control customisation; you can use the DOSBox Mapper to reassign the controls, but note that this will also change what those keys do for all other functions (including typing on the map and naming save files).
