The cook's granddaughter girl in Lord British's castle seems to teleport from one room to the other at random. Sometimes you can walk into her, sometimes it seems she is invisible and there is something unseen blocking you.

NPCs go about their business each day. Try taking a torch off the wall to help you see while in the castle. No one will mind you borrowing it, as the game says.
