I played quite a bit of UW 1....had an issue with my mouse last night, rebooted my laptop....now, I go to play again, and the game is acting as if I have no saved games. I had two. I had closed and restarted the game before also, in recent days, and my saved games worked fine. Very, very, odd.

Help! Where does the game store the save files? Not sure where to look. If this is going to happen, I may as well not bother playing the game anymore.
Saves are stored in the %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore equivalent of the game's install folder. If you're using XP (or have disabled UAC) saves are instead stored in the install folder itself.

Do your saves show up in one of these locations?
It's Win 7...should have mentioned that.

The only different things, that make me wonder, was this mouse freeze deal. I then had to reboot my laptop, for the first time in a very long time(usually just hibernate). Also, I see some documents I had open didn't save changes. And, I went into System Restore, thinking maybe something like a virus hit, and there are no daily restore points.

Weird stuff. But, a search shows rebooting Win 7 has a problem erasing daily restore points.

Anyhow, where would it be in Win 7? I see this folder: UNDEROM1, and there is a Save0 folder, that is empty.

That's the correct location but apparently your save is gone. Try right-clicking UNDEROM1 and choosing Restore Previous Versions. After it searches for a bit it should either show some previous versions of the folder or say nothing was found. If it lists a previous version that has your save in it simply click on that folder and click the Restore button and it will be restored. After that you should be able to use it normally.

If Previous Versions can't find it, well, it's probably gone for good unless you happen to be using a third-party backup solution (Windows' own backups and restore points show up when using Previous Versions).
Figures...yep...no prior saves found.

When I rebooted, Windows Defender said there was some malware found. So, it created a save point. My only other point is from 11/30, when I downloaded some updates. Been resisting installing:)

Anyhow....if there were daily points, as there should be, I could just go back to two days ago. If I go back to 11/30, that won't help me, I don't think. Would the games I downloaded even be there? I just got them from GoG in the last week.

I thought Restore's only changed system files, but I see from trying your Restore Pior Save it mention's Restore points.
Oddly, I checked my Ultima 7 save, and that's there fine.

I just broke down and started a new game.....I like this game too much and have wanted to play it for so long....thing is, I am very afraid of this happening again.....can't imagine having this happen if you were far into the game.

Any ideas on the cause? I guess I could make copies of the save files, occasionally.
I have the same problem with save games in Win7... Has this been solved yet?

I never figured out why,.....my new game has yet to do it.....though I have not played in some time.....if it happens again, I will update.
Under Windows Vista or 7, I would recommend to install the game outside of Program Files folder structure. This way windows virtual store doesn't move the saves out of the game dir.

Reinstalled game as recommended. Copied savegame that had not disappeared form VirtualStore folder. Now able to save games OK. Thx to all for help. Was about to give up playing in frustration.
Hi, I had the same issue. Like billy I hadn't restarted my PC in a while.

I got the clue from when Arkose said where the save games are stored when UAC is turned on..
Well I recently turned off my UAC and the game started saving in the game directory.

So I copy pasted %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore into explorer and BOOM there were my saves.

I copied them across to the game folder and I was back in business.

Thanks for giving me all the clues to work it out.
