Generally, just set the party (including the Avatar) to "attack nearest" unless you have a specific reason for someone to be set otherwise. You won't have to control anything manually that way. The only times you'll need to intervene is if you want to throw a spell or use an item - a healing potion on a party member, a harmful potion on an enemy.
