Playing Ultima 5 for the first time. Have not had any major problems with the game up until now. I'm trying tot get in to Bordermarch. Couldn't figure out how, looked up online and saw that you need a Grapple. Long time looking and found it. Nothing showed up in my inventory so I figured that it was some sort of automatic activation tool when you get close to a area you can use it on.

Nothing happened when I got to the mountain base of Bordermarch. Cant find any information online on how to use it, didn't see anything in the manual (unless I'm not looking hard enough). So desperation got me and I found a save file editor (don't feel like replaying 30+ h). According to the save file editor, simply named Ultima Save Editor, I do have the Quest item Grapple. I tried removing it from the save, added it back and reloaded my save. Same problem...

Do anyone know what to do? Is there something special I need to do? Saw 1 person with same problem as me here on GOG but they had no answers. Am I doomed to restart the game? or is there something I need to do before that I missed

TL;DR: Grapple not in inventory even tho I got it. What to do?

Was about to answer it, but I thought it did show in your inventory and had to start a new game to verify you were right about it not being there.

The grapple was seen (and is absolutely essential) during reign of the Shadowlords. After hearing rumors about it from the bard Bidney in Buccaneer's Den, the Avatar asked Lord Michael of Empath Abbey for the grapple and received it without any further hassle. Only with this piece of equipment could the quest be completed.

Just thought I would update after noticing this in my current U5 playthrough. It IS in your inventory after all, just not where you might expect it to be. It’s on the ‘Equipment’ page, which also shows how much food/gold/keys/gems/torches you have.
