Having completed U5 and U6 with the original Origin software back in the day, I am excited to play U7 via GOG using my Win 7, 64-bit laptop PC.

I used GOG Galaxy to download U7 Complete and all the goodies just fine.

But when trying to play the Black Gate, I have no keyboard control. I do have mouse control.
I have followed the guidance in the Support section -- checking for updates (none needed, Microsoft said), disabling UAC, then restarting my PC (shutting down, too), operating as admin, running as admin.

I get the introduction fine. But after selecting Start Game, I cannot type a character name.
I have figured out how to launch anyway (back to menu then Journey On) and again I have all the mouse control I need (with a character who seems to have been named by someone else and is already at EXP 200, Level 3, Training 3). But no keyboard control. I cannot even save. I mouse to inventory, click the disk, highlight the line to type the name of a saved game, but cannot type. ENTER then does not save. I can use the mouse to QUIT, but there is no save option.

No letter or number keys work. ESC doesn't function at anytime, including the introduction. None of the hot keys shown in the Player Reference Card function.

ALT-TAB will free my cursor, and then I can drag the game to my larger monitor, but ALT-TAB also minimizes my game and the game will not maximize after that. If I keep to my smaller screen that is part of the laptop, the lack of keyboard control is no different.

I'm not inclined to switch to Exult or other third-party software at this time. I want to get this to work.
I'm not afraid of the computer, but I'm not a code editor and would hesitate to do custom configurations that may affect functionality of my many other programs on this laptop.

Solutions, anyone? Suggestions?

Thanks!
Glenn

I should have read your post before buying this game (fortunately it's really not expensive)
Same problem as yours, and since you've got no answers in nearly one year, I guess I cant be too optimistic finding solution.

Exult is really good and has very few bugs these days. I highly recommend trying it:

http://exult.sourceforge.net/download.php

(download the Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP/Vista/7/8/10 binary snapshot)
I have no problems whatsoever on linux. The game should run just fine on any working computer because it is emulated in dosbox anyway.
Everything works fine here. Keyboard, mouse, everything.

I didn't use GoG Galaxy to install\run the game, though.

I am guessing Galaxy might be your problem.

Try deleting the game and installing it manually without GoG Galaxy. Don't even keep it running in the background.

Delete then reinstal the game fixed the issue (all done using Galaxy)
