I was playing Ultima VI and having fun with the game, until I decide to resume it one day and try to keep playing after going through the Cyclops cave a couple of times to grind for gold.

That's when I came across a number of problems. I tried to use the moon stone to make a gate and when I would try to enter it, the game would freeze and it wouldn't respond to any of the commands on my keyboard.

Later, I found out that it would also freeze whenever I tried to save the game in Britain.

So I did what anyone would do, uninstall the game and reinstall it to see if that would fix my problem, but even when I chose to backup my saves, I found out that they were gone.

Seriously, how do you screw this up GOG? I chose to backup my saves and they're still gone! How do you screw up something so simple? This is completely unacceptable. I thought you were able to fix problems like this. I thought you were capable of giving us old games, but when you don't notice this problem, it's pathetic.

I wonder if this is still fixable. When you say you chose to backup your saves, what do you mean exactly? Was it a choice during the uninstall procedure, or did you back them up manually before uninstalling? Do you know where the save file location is? Sometimes Windows security can prevent games from seeing save files, especially older games that usually place save files in the same directory as the game itself.

You say you were playing without any problems but ran into some when you resumed playing later. Were there any major changes to your computer in that time? That might shed light on the source of the freezing you were experiencing.

I agree with Waltorious, sounds like something went wrong on your PC, or the files got corrupted. I could be wrong, but I think when you choose to backup your save games via the GOG uninstaller, that its looking for a specific folder, like many games have, usually in the My Documents. Really old games like U6 often save their games in strange ways (compared to modern ones that are more standardized). The game is so small, its worth it to just make a backup copy manually of ALL the files too. Do you have any backups of your PC that would have the old files?

All that said, I've never heard or experienced this problem with U6.
