I'd like to play this with a friend but don't want to install galaxy or register somewhere for it. Is it possible?

I don't think so but I don't have any way of testing this.
You go in game and you have a choice for online game. Then it asks you to make a game password, it names the game for you. Doesn't seem like public games, more for a couple friends to sync up and play similar to old school co-op.
