Please disregard the "not working windows 10" post I made as I found out the problem: the AOD multi-patch breaks the game on Windows 10 and the only way I know to fix it is reinstalling the game.

The real problem is the "black screen on menus" bug which I can't seem to fix. I tried using the multi-patch but that was when I found out that the patch breaks it on this OS.

I've found out that hardware vp stops it running anyway unless I disable it and I've also tried other options in different sites inlucding Steam, known to fix it like turning off overlay mixer, changing texture options to 32 bit ARBG, etc. but none of them worked.

Any better ideas?

I know this is an old post, but due the recent sales, I picked it up and had the same issue.
I remember fixing this long ago when I had this game on a disc.

After poking around, I remembered what to do.

To fix this issue of black menus, you just have to disable the Framerate compensation at the General tab, on the Settings.

Also a plus:

You can manually type your screen's aspect ratio (Monitor aspect option).
Here's a small list if you need:

4:3 = 1.33
16:10 = 1.6
16:9 = 1.77
21:9 = 2.35
32:9 = 3.5
