I have tried turning off as much as i could for the game in the manage 3d of the nvidia control, but it did not work and still got the same error message and i checked if i had Rivaturner but could not find it, because it is a 3rd party app that isn't in on peoples pc's by default right? then i don't have it and that option didn't work.
save all your files somewhere (the save etc...) and uninstall and reinstall reboot PC and try it again.
gewoon even alles opslaan ergens apart saven, deinstalleren, herinstalleren en dan even rebooten en dan is alles klaar en in orde. gebeurde bij me ook is een keertje,

I know this is a bit of a necro-post. But I want to post this here for anybody else having this issue. I also had it.

I did *not* need to do any huge onerous thing like futzing with my NVidia settings, or uninstalling/reinstalling. A very simple fix for most older windows games is to use dgVoodoo (http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2/)).

1) Download the main zip & unzip somewhere you know to find it. There is a quick start "web page" in there that explains the rest, but I'll put it here, too.
2) Find the executable for your game (in GOG, click the application settings button at the top, Manage Installation -> Open Directory).
3) Copy everything from dgVoodoo/3Dfx/x86 and dgVoodoo/MS/x86 into the game's directory.
4) Click Play. Should work, now.

Why this works/what this is doing:

This game - like many from its era - relied on either 3DFx Glide, or older no longer valid versions of DirectX. dgVoodoo provides libraries that "emulate" these older graphics libraries, by taking the calls to them, and translating them into calls to the modern DirectX libraries. The games were crashing because they are trying to use technologies that either no longer exist, or no longer work.
On Windows 11, I notice I have this problem only once I plug (and use) my drawing tablet. It seems it occure when you use a second screen.

This worked perfectly. Thank you for this!
