Aivskar: I don't have dual monitors or an overclock, but the problem you're describing did happen a lot with my old GTX 680, and the only thing that would fix it was to underclock it. I haven't had the same problem with this GPU, at least it's not telling me that the driver is crashing in this game, even though the symptoms are similar.

dsr07mm: If you go at event viewer you will find same error its just not poping out on destkop. Underclock is not a solution, its accepting that card is fault and someone is lazy to RMA it or buy another one :) My overclock is giving me like 15-20fps in W3 so thats not acceptable. Look at guru3d forums, a lot of people have crashes, its driver related.
no it's the game you noob. underclocking makes witcher 3 stable
Underclocking isn't the only issue. My game crashes whether Im overclocked or not. Only the crashing when I'm not overclocked actually lets me get back to the desktop instead of needing a hard reboot.
Since rectifying the crash to desktop issue I've encountered a new problem! When spending too long in the menu screen, i.e. reading the letters or books in the inventory, my game freezes but sound/music still plays despite game completely unresponsive! Had to end program from task manager every time so far... Anyone else experiencing this problem?
These bugs really are marring my experience of what is such a great game so far...

WRONG. Going on old drivers work with my clock on 1550mhz on gtx970 so yeah, I'm noob.
I've got more that 12 hours of Witcher 3 on the clock now and only the 1 crash near the beginning. The game seems quite stable to me.
I'm using latest drivers, GTX 970, Windows 7 (64bit) and playing the whole thing with controller only.

Witcher 3 runs my Asus GTX-970 constantly at +70C while other games barely raise the temp to +50C. So there is a potential problem which could caused by a host of hardware issues such as under power power supply, weak discrete components used on the GTX card along w/ a bunch of software & driver related issues.
I have quite a few noticeable crashes, stuttering problems as you are all aware of Witcher 3 related and here are the list you could do to hopefully make it run longer before it crashes:

1) Make sure your power supply provided plenty of 12V current that your graphic card requires.
2) You can't do a thing about weak discrete components on your graphic card. It will die eventually and I have heard witcher 3 crashes some GTX-9xx cards cold. Just hope that you don't have one of those.
3) Run full screen instead borderless screen.
4) Don't run monitoring application like MSI burner, FRAPS for now. When you are no longer experiencing crash, you can run those monitoring app again.

FYI, I run Witcher 3 on an Phenom II 1090T, 8GB RAM with a GTX-970 at ultra setting 1080p (latest driver for witcher 3 release, Nvidia Hairworks, background NPC at middle setting), Win7 64bits. My FPS is mostly at 50-60. I could play up to 2-3hrs w/o crash.

Just when I thought I'd solved the crashes to desktop, after a godd 3-4hrs with no crashes (but 3 freezes in inventory) it crashes again during a cutscene! FFS!!!

Did you turn of controller vibration? I went 6 hours without any crashes or freezes after turning that off.
As mentioned in the Inventory crash thread...try uninstalling Geforce Experience completely. Has worked for me so far...
I have to comfirm random crashes... not just in the inventory, the system is still up but the game overlays my desktop and I can't use any application, I have to restart the system.
I was getting this same thing. Constant crashing to black screen with no error message, sometimes audio would still be playing. I tried a dozen different things, until I lowered the clock on my GPU. I have a GTX 980 FTW, which is factory overclocked. Since then, I was able to play for hours without a single crash. Also noticed that my temps were down 10-15 degrees, which is pretty crazy imo.

Windows 8.1 Professional 64-bit

after uninstalling Geforce Experience i've played for a 10mn, not 2) it's a progress afterall
I removed the overclocks on both the CPU and GPU, and have yet to encounter a crash since. It also seems to happen if I'd been alt+tabbing a lot.

My overclocks were prime/unigine tested and stable, 12hrs. It's more than likely bad code and will be patched at some point. Overall, I'm impressed with the stability and performance of the game, given it's scope and having just been released to the public.

Just my 2 cents...
