Boeriemore: After meeting up with Keira I discovered that Wandering in the Dark was the next quest and there was no way to retreat even before entering the cave. First time round this was a real challenge as I ran out of spirits so was unable to meditate during this lengthy quest.

WildHobgoblin: Well, this may be fairly obvious, but maybe still worth pointing out - it's definitely worthwile to clear some of the question marks on the map, I personally would recommend clearing all of them in white orchard... You don't get a lot of xp but you do aquire some skill points and supplies... (also very useful early on - farm honey and sell to Tomira).
HoS is not meant to be tackled until you're a lot further along in the game.
Also, don't worry too much about the recommended level - everything that is green (up to 5 levels above your current one) will be fine if you prepare at least a little...
I did clear all question marks in White Orchard before I got to Velen. I have cashed in my crowns at Novigrad bank so
can now spend on supplies.

I have very little equipment, hardly any oils or bombs and no decoctions and no coins so I went back to a previous save.
I then managed to enter Oxenfurt and Novigrad .without a pass picking up quests as I moved around.
So far all my quests and contracts have levels above my current level.

Alyosha: Whoops. Yeah, you're right - Wandering in the Dark hits below the belt if you don't have supplies. I don't know that it is any harder with Hearts of Stone installed. I wouldn't think so, but I didn't have the expansion installed when I did it, so I can't be sure.

Gosu Noob has a feature where you can sort quests. I tried sorting quests by level - there don't seem to be be too many between level 4 and 8, but it should give you a couple of options.

That site shows many quests at level 0 which I never heard of even during my first play through.
I wonder whether the levels shown have not increased with HOS.

Sorry, but the list of levels there sucks. The first page has many quests shown as level 0.
I checked some of these quest walk throughs and will give just one example.
"A dog's life" tells about fighting a pack of level 7 wolves. I did it and it certainly is not level 0.
