Hey guys i was wondering if i could use the CD version that i bought at release and just buy the expansion pass on gog or do i have to buy the GOTY edition?

It should work. The boxed edition is compatible with GOG expansion packs. Unless I don't know something and the boxed version of The Witcher 3 sold in Canada had a Steam key. But that's unlikely.

All boxed versions can be redeemed at GOG. If you do that and then buy the expansion pass you will have the prerequisites for GOG to gift you the GOTY for free.
