The key is on the table to unlock the door. (Get down and use the witcher senses to find it).

ive been all over both ends can't find the key. there is some witcher stuff on the upstairs shelf that i can't reach

Are you on the ground floor? Go to the ground floor, quietly head towards the sleeping guard and the key is on the table near the guard. If it isn't glowing with the witcher senses, then I can't help you. Its not upstairs where you come in, and its not on a shelf.
