I recently installed the GOG Galaxy client and decided to give it a go with Witcher 1. Download and installation was seamless but when I tried to play the game a launcher came up (highly unnecessary considering I'm using GOG Galaxy already). And when I try to launch the game from there it gave me the error that the "Minimum requirements are not met" even though that's impossible considering this game came out in 2008. Then I searched this and find that this is a common problem in the game that many many people experienced. And the official fix for it is to use some command that has the teeny tiny side effect of disabling high resolution textures and official fix for that is, (this must be a fucking joke) a random mod made by some guy that doesn't really work anymore.

Okay. Let me just put it this way. When I launch Steam and hit play on Half-life that came out in 1998, I play Half-life that came out a decade before your game did and I play it flawlessly. You did not fix a well known error for 7 years! This experience is really not doing too well to warm me up to neither GoG nor CD Project RED.

You can try this instead:

CD Projekt's support improved greatly with Witcher 2 and Witcher 3. The first game is a bit janky but it's still worth playing in my opinion. I hope you can get it running at acceptable settings.

That fix doesn't work on Windows 8.1. DirectDraw is already enabled and that registry key does not exist. I got it to work but I'm having random freezing issues that last for a full second before continuing and that really doesn't help with the rhythm based combat. I also had it crash on me once but that fortunely did not repeat.

I have that very same freezing problem on Windows 8.1 as well. Sadly, it would appear there is no actual fix to this issue, at least that I could find. It's really a shame...

I can't help with Windows 8 problems, unfortunately. If you haven't yet, you should submit a support ticket to GOG. They can take a few days to reply but they should reply.

Anyone else have suggestions?

Also, out of curiosity, how did you get it working without the minimum system requirements error?

Same way. -dontForceMinReqs

However I don't think the high resolution mod fix did anything. And It's not like there is an Override folder for the GOG Galaxy realese. I put it in DATA since that's the direction its referred to in one of the .ini files. But I honestly cannot tell if graphics look any different. They don't look as good as the screenshots on GoG though.

I also tried changing the registry keys and setting the texture quality high that way. But it resets itself as soon as you launch the game. System requirements checker must be stripped.
This issue needs a real oficial fix. It is a shame that a sold game needs an unofficial mod for almost fix the game.
Witcher fans needs more support.
Good news!
This error is fixed without doing nothing under windows 10.

The Override folder goes in Data. Any mods go in that older.

That's good to hear, thank you.! I haven't had the time to install Windows 10 yet, but this is one more reason to do it.

This is surprising to me though. I was afraid Windows 10 would break compatibility with older games even more like all new versions of Windows do but it seems Microsoft outdid themselves this time.
