You need to install this unofficial patch
https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/1229-the-suffering-series-aio-patch/

Then go to main game folder ...\GOG Galaxy\Games\The Suffering and delete two files "dsound.dll" and "dsound.ini"
Now game must run without crashes.

honestly the AiO patch doesnt do justice for running in HD or 4k resolutions. + it has that nasty side effect of having the right side of the screen when looken in archives of causing artifacts or glitches.

I recommend looken at my Ultimate Guide to patch the game and do your suggestion...youll be able to truly enjoy the game in any resolution you want then.

if you are using the AiO fan patch you may be able to select the resolutions you say but note it comes with artifacts as a side note unlike my method
Now instead of crashing during the game, it crashes the moment I try to start it. Greeat.
