I am trying to train Settlers so that they become skilled. I have 101 'hands' but am lacking in foresters, slaughterhouse workers, etc. And even when I ban them from the main building in the hope they will go out and get skilled, they just seem to wander around. Also have bunches of 'carriers' who stand around or worse still, do handstands as they don't appear to have anything to do. Am I doing something wrong??

Thanks

Which Settlers are you playing? It sounds like 3 or 4.

There is a tab that looks like a settler on the left side. This is the tab for controlling your distribution of labor.

Settlers will automatically become some professions with the available tools. This includes things such as farmers and miners. This only works as long as you have available settlers. If you run low on settlers build more housing.

Others professions such a geologists, thieves, and pioneers are controlled via the population distribution tab. There are little up arrows for directly turning free settlers into these professions. Again, you will need the proper tools. There is also a search and select function for them.

Military also can work the same way. As long as you have a Barracks(?) you can have it automatically create new soldiers when weapons become available or you can turn that function off. You can leave it so that you can choose when to create new Soldiers. This is done on the military tab.

Perhaps one of the most important functions in the games is also on the population distribution tab. You can choose what percentage of your settlers are carrier, builders, and levelers. You need to be very careful as you can really change how the game goes with this. Early on you want more Builers and levelers. When you build more housing you want to make sure that you lower this first to prevent more than you want. This again will require the correct tools.

Hey there, thank you for all your information. Unfortunately, I guess I forgot to say that I am playing Settlers 2: 10th Anniversary Edition so sadly all the options you mention aren't available. But some really useful information, thank you so much for your time :)

You need beer+tool. After that they'll get trained automatically should you build a building that needs them.

So to get a baker for example, you need to have produced a rolling pin and a pin. Then build a bakery and as soon as it's finished and connected, if you don't have a baker already, a new one will be created.

EDIT: this is based on the original Settlers 2, which i believe works similarlky to the 10th Anniversary edition.
