I was having mouse problems. Everytime I moved my mouse the game would freeze/jerk/lag yet music and sounds would carry on playing. To fix this I disabled the hardware cursor - you can do this by going to the game's install directory then data -> setting and open engine.ini in notepad and change hardwareCursor = 1 to hardwareCursor = 0

Hope this helps anyone else having this problem!

I was having the exact same issues and this indeed helps me a lot. Thank you kindly!
Had the same problem.. thanks!
You da man!
I need to try this. Sometimes my mouse won't go further than half of the screen and in other occasions my mouse suddenly starts to whirl the screen around. The only solution up till now was to leave the game and start again.

go there:
http://www.gog.com/forum/the_settlers_series/settlers_ii_10th_anniversary_camera_issues

basically disable visual themes from the shortcut you use to start the game, and that issue is gone...
Thanks..
I bought Settler 2 Gold from GOG and have now the same problem. However there is neither a SETTINGS folder nor an engine.ini in the Settlers directory. Can anyone help me with that?

the settlers 2 gold you are talking about and the settlers 2 anniversary edition this thread is about are two different games
Unfortunately this solution doesn't work on windows 8.1, as you can't disable the themes from the compatibility settings as it's not listed. Back to the drawing board for me :(

Edit: wrong thread sorry.

Hey Guys
Sorry for reincarnating this thread but I had exactly the same issue and - you won't believe it - but quitting the "Tobii" from your System Tray (that's an app for controlling the "Tobii Eye Tracker") while running settlers fixed this issue for me!
If you don't feel comfortable with disabling Tobii you can also - as described above - disable the hardware-cursor by setting hardwareCursor inside the {{ Settlers II Game Folder }}/data/settings/engine.ini-file to 0.

Hello everyone, unfortunately this creates a new problem for me. Under data> settings there is only the engine.xml file that sounds similar. When I open it I see something like this:

Š% Ÿ ÷ —È? I, Õ¹ / šŸöšÍÕ… ÄO · ÁM – Âaá M¹§¤ € MÞ ¥ # «÷ µÎec × œ íÊÐp ݸΠ† üêͽøäBâŽZô

Not readable and therefore I cannot set the hardware cursor to 0 ... Can someone help me, please, I love this game so much !!! Thanks very much!

LefTwAce: .. there is only the engine.xml file that sounds similar. ..
The game from GOG should have a file named engine.ini in the same place as engine.xml
engine.xml is an encoded file and can only be read by the game.
