So are there any mods for the game? Not sure if I should buy here or the history edition?

For the Golden Edition from GOG there is a Mod called "Return To The Roots". You are able to play Multiplayer with friends around the globe, and all resolutions are supported, and the game runs smooth as butter.
(For 2560x1440 QHD monitors I recommend playing in 1280x720
For 3840x2160 4K monitors I recommend playing in 1920x1080
.. so that the interface scales exact by 2 times.
To get crispy 2x2 pixels, a feature called "Integer Scaling" can be set in the nVidia/AMD Control Panel)
The RTTR Mod has features that can be turned on, like "Coin-Delivery turned off" for new built military buildings, or "specify exact number of tools that has to be produced".
The History Edition however, which is not on GOG, is the official refresh of The Settlers II, from 2016 (the original is from 1996), called HISTORY EDITION. It's limited, like the old game. You can't even play multiplayer.
