So I decided to show my son Settlers 2 (10th AV) and while we can get the game running, it refuses to save any settings and more importantly, any games.

I figure it's a permissions issue with Windows 10 not allowing write access or something to the save folder. I've tried installing both on C and on G (games drive) with same result.

I know it's worked under Windows 8.1 and previous. Any tips for 10? Would I be better running in a VM?

Tried compatibility mode as XP sp 3 without success.

Note that there's no errors, just the save box flashes red if I click on a slot. I can click save but it doesn't actually save.

It should save in your Documents folder in a 'S2' directory... maybe you can run it as admin, if you think it's a rights issue.

Yes it saves in Documents\S2. I've tried running as admin, changing permissions on the S2 folder, nothing seems to work.
Weird, here I have no problems and I'm on windows 10 (fall update) too... I don't think any app would need special rights for writing in the documents folder, but maybe it has something to do with the ownership of the S2 directory.

You could try moving it to your desktop, then create a new one manually and move the contents from the folder on your desktop in there?

edit: It's a long shot but who knows, maybe it helps ;)

edit2: good it's solved! thanks walak for reporting!

Aha you know what, I just bet that's it. I have Bitdefender too and I'll guarantee it's stopping the exe writing to the documents.

Let me pop a little ol' exclusion in there.....

That's it! I don't know why I didn't think to check Bitdefender, but there you go! Thanks walak :)

Hi

Got nostalgic and found Settlers II and tried to install. I have windows 10 but I keep getting an error message saying the game is not compatible and I need a 64bit version, can anyone advise?
Some more information would be helpful. What is the complete error message.
