A new improved map generator is now free to use at http://settlers2.net/map-generator/

At the moment it is continuously improving on a daily basis. The generated maps are downloadable, have separation of water, greenland and mountains and contain enough stuff to work in the original Map Editor that is bundled with the GOG's Gold Edition of the game.

There are still a lot of features missing such as placement of players and the actual resources that you need to be able to play (trees, granite, gold, coal etc.). These missing things are hopefully implemented within the next week or so, although they may be a bit sloppy at first until improved (and more complex and harder to come up) logic is written at a later date.

Enjoy!

A huge milestone today: the maps have all prerequisites to be played right away! Only some tinkering left to be done to get immediately S2 compatible maps with no need to re-save them in the original Map Editor. In RttR the maps are already playable right off the bat :)

The project will hit GitHub sooner or later.
Forgot to do updates here a year back! The map generator has been capable of saving S2 compatible maps since September 2014. I'm again working on the project with the intent to do some background work with it to make it more developer friendly, separation of concerns, better abstraction, tests and other technical improvements. So probably no new actual features coming out before that work is done.

Project is up at GitHub as promised: https://github.com/Merri/map-generator

You can make feature requests, bug reports and such over there.
Thanks!
Maybe too optimistic, but would it be possible for these to work in the 10th year edition/remake?

yeah you can use it!

- generate a new map at the site: http://settlers2.net/map-generator/ and download it, you will get a [filename].swd file in.

- open the mapeditor you got from GOG with s2-10th, you can convert s2 maps with this editor.

- in the editor go to 'File, Open...', select file type: settlers II maps, browse for the [filename].swd map and load it.

- now use 'File, Save As...' to save the file as a 10th aniversary map.

that's all, you should be able to play it now!
As for making direct support, yes, it is a bit too optimistic. To my knowledge 10th Anniversary map format hasn't been documented and being a newer game it has probably been made harder to analyze how it works. I haven't taken a look at them as I really prefer the original game much more.

However, because I am making better abstraction for the map generator it will be possible to use the map generating part for other games as well. Personally I'm most interested in trying to output Transport Tycoon Deluxe or Civilization V maps; but that is still far far away.

Thanks, that's brilliant. Maybe I need to re-install the game then ;)
Simply brilliant. =)

Failed the first time I tried a map. It was set to 0 players, which I noticed happened when generating a new map, unless I hit "Randomize Players", even if the option was ticked for e.g. 4 players. When I noticed that and put it through the save as process again, it worked :)

Remember what was my beef before. I got the game working in Linux, but couldn't get the Vikings expansion working. Bugger. I love that thing.

Fantastic work Merri, the scenario maps have got a little stale after playing through the game so many times ;)

Hi,

game crashes after few seconds. Any Ideas how to fix it ?
settlers2.net/map-generator/

i cant download a generated map anymore.

Is the site down or what, any clue?
You can find dozens of maps for Settlers 2 10th Anniversary on siedler-maps.de, also translated to English.

The 10th Anniversary map is easy to master. First thing to do is to paint all the surface with grass, from the Logical-Editor list. Two clicks and there you go. I recommend enabling building sites and locked spots from the View Menu.
A German made a tutorial for this:
youtu.be/b2o6OvI67Xo

From the ingame-menu I suggest to set the graphical settings to highest, but the shaders to off, to spot the water surfaces on the ground.

The terrain grid differs from original Settlers II, so the map-conversion isn't ideal. In the older S2 you have triangle-faces between 3 spots, and in the newer S2 every spot lies on a hexagonal texture-field. It's easier to read because you can see on which spot the farmer can saw the grain as an example.

The Settlers 10th. An. editor also has a map generator in it, but I don't recommend using it.

I'm late with this reply but there was issues with HTTPS at that time which has been fixed since.
