I bought settlers 4 i few days ago and really looked forward to many
happy playing hours.. unfortunately the refuses to start. I get a message
saying

"Software 3D: error initializing graphic interface
Hardware 3D: error initializing graphic interface"

I use windows 7 x64 with and nvidia gforce 420 m graphics card. I have
updated all thinkable kinds of drivers, updated the whole system... I have
tried running the game as an administrator and in different compatible modes
but nothing works. please help me out here! cuz I NEED TO PLAY :P

ZFR: Here is something I found on the forum:

"I had this issue to I have to set my screen resolution down to 1280x1024 or lower in order to not get this error don't know if that'll fix anyone else's problem but thought it worth mentioning"

Did you try that?

iTrash: Go download and install dgVoodoo2. Just drag and drop the "ddraw.dll" and "d3dimm.dll" into the "Exe" folder. As for now, make sure to download the WIP version because there have been some issues with the stable releases lately. After that, it should work. You can also use the dgVoodoo configurator to add some graphic effects like texture filtering and aspect ration fullscreen scaling and cool stuff like that.

pgshussein: Dear, Just I want to inform you that the above solution is working perfectly
Just follow the bellow steps:
1- Download dgVoodoo2 and extract the folder
2- Move the dgVoodoo folder to your game path
3- open dgVoodoo folder and locate the dll files (DDraw.dll, D3DImm.dll, D3D9.dll and D3D8.dll)
4- Move the dll files to the game folder Settlers4\Exe\
5- Open folder dgVoodoo and doubleclick on the exe file
6- when the app open select from config folder the settlers 4 \ Exe path then press Apply
7- Open settlers 4\Exe\ folder and run the file name S4_Main.exe

jonhpepper: the game will now load but the mouse isn't correctly aligned and i have no clue why
