Wrecks were always a pain in the butt because it seemed like I never found anything to justify all the time I spent trying to find my way out. Then I figured out a trick that I could use to search the wreck and find my way out.
When you enter the wreck move along the wall on the left side and as you move through the ship try to keep touching the wall to the left*. If you do this you will trace the outer perimeter of the wreck which will eventually bring you back to the entrance by which time you should have visited every room/chamber onboard.
Be sure to deconstruct any debris or containers you find so you know when you come to a new area. For ladders simply drop a flare before moving on, again so that you know if you have used that ladder before or not.
It might not work for very large or complex wrecks which could have central areas not connected to the outer wall so you might miss something.
I've tried this myself a few times and I haven't gotten lost since!
*You can use the right hand wall if you want just make sure you use the same wall throughout the entire wreck otherwise it doesn't work.
