Just wondering if anyone plays one of the more mundane occupations. I don't see a lot of advice on here for, say, a blacksmith.

I can only play as the Thief, or maybe the Robber. I tried getting into other businesses, but I was painfully bored. Seems like it's all just busy work. I'm not sure, I just couldn't get that far into them. They probably introduced Thief for people like me.
I like the thief occupation too, but the priest and traveling entertainer are pretty good too. Priest is good in the start of a fresh game when you hold sermons. Entertainer I make a cheap load of willow rods and then make good money off of plays later on.
Landlord played wonderfully well. I made good steady profit and spent most of my time focusing on politics. Once I had enough wealth I bought up all the competition and automated everything. Automated Inns work pretty darn well.

Yea the publican isn't bad. I've only done a couple play throughs with that occupation. I don't know if this is the way it is but, the ai never upgrades their public house to an inn in any of my games. Same goes for the cathedral.
I've played as almost all of the starting occupations, and many of the advanced occupations as well, and the one thing I can say for sure, is no two play alike.

As the Thief you can steal and kidnap and pick pockets, the Entertainer gets to put on performances, the Necromancer resurrects his minions instead of hiring them, the Guard can raid buildings and pick fights with the robbers, the Robbers rob and pillage, etc. It is truly amazing the diversity of them. Though they may share similar aspects, they function much different.

If you like playing the Thieves Guild, I would suggest trying the Robber Baron, Guardsman, and Traveling Entertainer professions as they are somewhat similar.
My first play through in this series was actually a bricklayer. I had a great time with it. I just made tons of tops and sold those everyday. I find that's the easiest way for me to run a lot of my own buildings is to stick with one or two items and sell huge stacks of them once a day, or every other day.
