The game literally crashes after I select a save slot. I have tried the recommendation of 'running as administrator'. No dice. Any way to get a refund from this?
Write to Customer Support. They will give you a refund if they can't fix the problem for you.
After a bit more investigation (on my side) I determined that the video card was being crippled by too much resource usage. The dxdiag file showed a Resource Exhaustion warning and a Buffer Overflow for this game.

The "solution" was to go update my NVidia Graphics Drivers and enable the 'Experience Software' that theoretically is supposed to regulate graphics card usage during gameplay. I was able to run and play the game with no issues.

Therefore the "problem" appears to be that maybe the game was designed with absolutely no performance logic and was deferring entirely to the graphics card while greedily requesting resources. If the graphics software wasn't regulating this usage the game just crashes and burns. This is dangerous. If users / players aren't aware of this and typically turning this on you could be burning out video cards....this is literally the ONLY game I've had to enable that for.

Well I never use Experience (since it is nothing more than a waste of resources imo) and was able to play through the game from start to finish ... so maybe you just needed to upgrade your drivers?
