Perhaps I'm being slow, but I can't figure out how to actually save the game :(

Press ESC and a menu will pop up. Choose save/load.

heh, I tried that, but I see it doesn't work during sequences.

Sequences? You can only save when the game is interactive, if that's what you mean.
