Just downloaded the DVD version and everything works great except there is no audio during the movies. Midi plays fine. Any ideas on this?

did you check the config panel to make sure the game sound is not muted, there are 2 buttons one for midi & other for sound.

the sound files that come with overseer are hidden & you can't edit them, maybe try this fix to install the .dll & it should fix it up. I just copied the folder from the dvd disk & did the setup again. you need to stop the config tool from sitting on yout task bar as it can crash the game.

Nothing is muted. I don't even have sound in the intro The videos all play fine there just is no sound. Somebody else must have this problem because I have it on two different computers. Should have waited to see if anyone else had this problem first before I bought it.

Did all that but still no sound. I am just going to forget about playing it. Thanks for your help.
I had the same problem too initially, although my problem might have been of a different shade. Let me share my experience nonetheless in the slight case that it might actually be of some help.

When I started the game for the first time a message titled "ffdshow compatibility manager" popped up saying the following:

"The application 'OVERSEER.EXE' has made an attempt to load ffdshow. This dialog is shown because this application is not listed in the ffdshow whitelist or blacklist. Your choice will be applied to both audio and video, if both are used."

With this message came the choices to either use ffdshow or not use it. The first time I tried the option of not using ffdshow and I had no sound in the videoclips; the actual gameplay had the music and the voice but the movies were silent that night. I restarted the game and this time chose to use ffdshow, and after that the sound worked everywhere in the game, no more silent movies for this P.I.

Hopefully there's something here that could be applied to your problem or to aid possible future helpseekers regarding the no sound issue. Perhaps someone else can eloborate this further, I unfortunately lack the technical know-how to offer further aid.

the only problem is if people select use ffdshow always or choose not to use always the menu does not come up again & then they are stuck as it doesn't come back again. the only way to safe guard this is to chose only this time, this way when they restart the game they can then choose the best way to go. once everything is working they can choose use always.
I am having the same problem having just installed the game on a Win 7 64 machine - no sound in any of the movies.

How can I get the initial ffdshow popup back so I can change the settings?
Solved the issue for me - reinstalled a newer version of ffdshow and now all sound and videos play correctly.

The new version can be found at the following link: sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/

Hope that helps.

I deleted the ffdshow file from the overseer folder so it didn't clash with the new version. I also had a 2006 version of ffdshow which I uninstalled prior to the new version.
