Starfury is one of the 1st things I snag when I have some descent armor. You need an umbrella and gravitation potion. hit the potion, grab the umbrella, and just cruise the stratosphere. I usually find the Fury in the 1st or 2nd sky island I come across. A pet helps too because keeping the baddies off your ass can be a problem. I'd go with a 'Hornet Staff', I think that's what it's called, because early on it is the easiest one to make.

On another TOTALLY UNRELATED NOTE, I'm on Roman groove lately and I'm trying to figure out how to make something with columns. My biggest problems are how to make them and how to make them so I can walk through them, which I can probably do with 'active' blocks

Starmaker, I take it you are playing normal, not expert?

If so, I'd definitely grab a few bombs (find them, buy them from demolitionist/skeleton merchant, or fish for bombfish) and shatter one orb. No more than 2, for sure. If you are in a tungsten world, build that pickaxe, or the gold/platinum. Or, better yet, see if you can sneak out to the ocean to snag a reaver. You will need one of those for the meteorite. Then just do some exploring until the meteorite lands. One should give you enough for the set of armor and the space gun, and you are set until hardmode.

I don't rush for EoC. There's no point.So you get the dryad. Big whoop. About all she's good for is pumpkin seeds, and Well Fed is really only important on expert. But before I take on EoC, I' make sure I either have the speed boots or a couple swiftness potions. The double-jump isn't nearly as important.Like someone said, missiles are your friend. Fire arrows and a shadewood/ebonwood bow are all you really need, though if you have tungsten or higher burning a hole in your pocket, that's icing. A couple strategically placed campfires and sunflowers make it much easier.

Another thing I've come to appreciate -- don't put off fishing for too long. I've taken to starting as soon as I have enough iron for a Reinforced. That will cover what you need until you get the Golden Fishing Rod. Build a few fishing holes in convenient locales. Why run all over the world and brave the beasties to get a catfish when you can just drop down a mineshaft to a safe jungle microibiome right under your base? Hoard a bunch of crates until hardmode, and you can make titanium armor as soon as you get back from the underworld. Bombfish are great. Use all the extra stars (after maxing out your mana) for enchanted earthworms until you either get Buggys or Master Bait.
Have you tried crafting a bunch of "I" or "T" statues for the first level? Or are you looking for something on a larger scale?

Problem is, I don't have decent armor (but I do have an umbrella). I have iron, some accessories for a total of 19, and too little silver to craft an upgrade. Blue chickens hit me for 20-22 with feathers, and I need to kill a few to get feathers for the potion. So far I climbed three ropes into space, didn't find an island but triggered the slime rain. Then the guard shooed me out of the office =(
I think I'll build a tower of hay next to the rope to support an enclosure and try to pluck a chicken.

My base is all function now, the only aesthetic concession is a gray brick back wall (I like it more than stone slab, even though it's less efficient). I also built scaffolds below it to grow plants in pots (the plan to farm bait via pots failed, nothing whatsoever popped out) and catch fireflies. By the time I was done, the firefly season had ended but I lucked out and caught two gold birds in a single night.


Well, I have 200 hp now, which means it rushes for me. (Oh and that one time when I had 160 hp and accidentally freed up a slot on the hotbar and a suspiciously looking eye ended up in it, with predictable consequences.)

This is contingent on finding a jungle microbiome. Finding stuff underground is hard. And moving water around requires buckets, and buckets require iron.

That being said, if I got you right, fishing for the Reaver Shark isn't as hopeless a plan as I previously thought. And I have just enough iron to build a railroad to the ocean. That's actually very encouraging, thank you.

That shark is pretty easy to get, once you make your way to the ocean on either end of the world. To fish the oceans without being interrupted by monsters every 15 seconds or so, I built a vertical wall about 12-15 blocks high and installed a door at the bottom. Er, that was at the end of my bridge-to-nowhere. My bridge goes nearly all the way to the edge (I was exploring) but you don't need to make one at all if you don't want to. But getting a bit of distance from land seems to keep flying monsters away.

Anyway, get some bait and maybe some fishing potions and you're good to go. If you get junk like tin cans and shoes then your fishing % is too low and is causing junk to be hooked. One nice thing is that hooking a crate seems to nearly always get you some decent bait that comes with a nice % boost. Also keep in mind that you won't get good results if the pool of water is too small.

For fighting EoC, I finally lucked upon the Arkhalis. This weapon is pretty awesome at this stage of the game; with a super-fast swing that just rips through any monsters it hits. It was damaging the EoC fast enough that I was simply going kamikaze on it instead of using ranged weapons. Did a number on King Slime, too, though that one took a bit more finesse and some healing along the way. Before Arkhalis, I wasn't causing enough damage to win those fights. The thing makes quick work of the Goblin Army invasions, too. Seriously, if you find that sword, hang on to it.

Take care when mining the meteor ore: touch it and you take about 5hp damage each second. And the damn thing takes a pretty healthy chunk out of your world, around 800 -1,000 blocks it seems like (might be more), and adds around 400 blocks of meteor ore. Once you have the ore just scoot back home, convert it to bars, and make yourself a full set of armor from it. That'll give you a base defense of around 15-16 IIRC, and then your accessories will add to that.

Took out Skeletron a few hours ago and then cleared out the dungeon. Er, minus the chests I can't open yet. Skeletron was pretty easy. Made a mini arena, put on the meteor armor, and just blasted away with the Space Gun. Wearing the full armor meant that the gun didn't use mana so it was a simple matter of spray-and-pray. Was going well enough that I whipped out the sword for some close-in combat just for the hell of it.

It took me 1 platinum and 50 gold coins to reforge my Reaver Shark to "Light" just now. Geez.

But also finally got the Golden Bug Net. Took him long enough...

I hope you left most of the entrance (outside the door) of the Dungeon standing. If you didn't, you'll be unable to start the Lunar Event (ie. the Moon Lord fight).

Once you've defeated the Golem, the game tries to spawn a group of cultists at the Dungeon entrance. If it's missing due to being mined away for an arena, then they won't spawn and you can't start the event. I'm fairly certain that only the background walls and the blocks making up the floor are required, but it may not work if you've removed and manually replaced the walls.

I integrated the existing entrance structure (on my map I enter the dungeon from the left) into the arena: went maybe 80 blocks away from the leftmost point of the alcove / overhang to make my left-hand wall (just inside the adjoining forest area), and then started the right-hand wall atop the existing entrance alcove area - the arena actually includes that bit of area inside the entrance where you encounter the old man. As for mining the dungeon blocks, I only took a couple pieces when I first got the Reaver Shark just to see if it would mine the dungeon blocks, and that's about it. Oh, and knocked out around 30 blocks from deep inside the dungeon to get to some Demonite ore.

After seeing what the first meteorite did to the landscape, I didn't want to tear up the dungeon too badly.

True dat. I make sure to hold at 180 HP, then just hoard hearts until I have 12, 11 for HP, the last for a heart lantern.

I don't know that you can find a jungle microbiome. I never have, anyway. I just travel overland (usually with a hay skybridge to save on iron) until I find jungle, then drop to the surface and smack weeds and do some light terraforming until I get a Jungle Grass Seed. I'm usually in wood armor (cactus or ebon/shade if accessories bring it to an odd number in normal wood) so I do all this under cover. (Mud ceiling that I let jungle grow on.)

Lead/iron is much more common in 1.3, but personally, I think it's still too valuable to waste on armor or rails. Not until I have my fishing pole and 99 buckets. Then the rails go everywhere, starting on the roof of my skybridge so I can collect stars at 66 mph.

I recommend sand. When you no longer need it, you can bring it all back down safely standing on the ground, even in a box to protect you from pretty much everything but worm-types.

I've read in the Wiki that World size doesn't mean more ore, it just means the same amount of ore spread around more. So am I the only one who for convenience prefers keeping to a small world?

I prefer a larger world precisely because it is more spread out. The metal detector is much more effective if there are fewer resources in range. You can pretty easily figure out where the chest is if you find the top left corner of the detection range, for instance. And iron is easier to find since the "higher" metals are more spread out, less likely to be in the field of detection.

Otherwise, you spend the whole first part of the game being notified that there is yet more worthless tungsten in range, when you really want iron.

I've just checked upon this "spread out" these. I've created two fresh worlds, one small size, one large size.

The small world (W6) has about 13k tin ore, the large world (W7) about 70k copper ore
W6 12,5k iron ore - W7 65k lead ore
W6 8k tungsten ore - W7 42k tungsten ore
W6 5k platinum ore - W7 28,5k platinum ore

all according to TerraMap 1.0.8.

Progress log

I built a railroad to the western shore at the height of the tree. It happened to run directly below three flying islands. The first had a lucky horseshoe, the second is simply a fishing spot, and the third had SUPERIOR STARFURY and the sky mill.

I accidentally fell into the ocean and/or accidentally teleported home like five times in a row. I was building an arena to fight EoC and was in the process of figuring out what I lacked to craft a campfire when it popped up and got its optic disc handed to it (took me down to 50, regen band, no potions). I made a new fishing pole and took the train to the coast, started fishing at about 4:30 and by 8:30 I caught the Reaver Shark (it's not Light, but it's not terrible either).

Another Slime Rain happened, so I tried fighting the King Slime and nearly died, because I picked up a bunch of shrooms and those got eaten first on an emergency heal. I quit the game to survive.

While fishing, I discovered SUPERIOR STARFURY cuts up dragonflies like whoa, so I decided to see how it fares against tweezers. The answer is AWESOMELY, and I spent the rest of the day farming drumsticks and trying to get ancient shadow greaves to complete the set (nope). The plan is to smash a bunch of orbs at night to get plenty of meteorite ore, fight a goblin invasion, make spectre boots and then fight the tapeworm on an aboveground arena. (Oh and renovate the base. Storage is a mess again.)

I always wondered about that, since it seemed my large world chests filled up much earlier, but how could anything in a Wiki be wrong?
Sweet! Don't know if you know how the mechanics works, but it hits at midnight, so to maximize the number of meteorites you can get, wait until midnight, and if you don't get the message, break them after midnight and quit before 4:30 AM


Remember, every third orb you have to fight a tapeworm on his turf...

Starmaker is one of my favorite people in this forum but I have to confess, I never took her for a Terraria junkie. XD It's actually kind of sad watching her life get slowly sucked away by this game. :P
