I have the GoG version installed on my laptop as well as my desktop.

I want to be able to play inside and while sitting on the patio this summer!

I've tried to transfer saved games from my laptop to the desktop and they all crash out when loading.

Is there something I might be missing? I've simply transferred the whole Saves directory over.

Could in-save resolution be the cause? On my laptop I have it set to the maximun for my widescreen 17" (at work - don't remember the numbers), while on the desktop I'm going for the 1920x1200 resolution for my 24" widescreen monitor.'

Not help, but commiseration... I tried doing what you want to do last year and was unable to do so. I hope you are successful, but feel your pain if you are not.
